Linux-Sound:

What are the settings in 'make menuconfig' for
ESS Technologies 488 and 688 sound cards when
I'm configuring the kernel? Are they SB16 clones?

Joe

I have (in the past) used both these cards configured as SB16 clones.
(Also had /dev/sbcd working to use cdroms hanging off them).

Cheers

Oops, typo. That should be /dev/sbpcd

Cheers

You configured them as generic SB-Clones, to be precise, as SB8pro.

There are no SB16-compatible cards out there. None at all.

This means, ESS-Boards tend to run only at 8Bit.

Newer ESS chips like the 1688 have their own 16bit mode,
which should be supported by Linux (haven't tried for quite some
time tough).

Out of curiousity, should an ESS1868 work? I've never had any success,
with mine but then I didn't bother configuring it with isapnptools.

If not, how hard is it to acquire documentation for said chipset?

Matthew.

Ah - there's your problem. Assuming you use isapnptools to
configure it to something sane, it should work pretty much
out of the box with the SB driver.
