I am the author of the book Linux Multimedia Guide, published by
O'Reilly & Associates in 1996. The book was quite well received but is
now becoming somewhat dated, so I am investigating what should go into
a second edition. I am looking for input from people who have read the
book and/or are knowledgeable about Linux and multimedia
development. I would be interested in hearing your opinions on how to
make this a better book -- what should be added, changed, or removed.

Some of the additional topics I have in mind for the revision include:

- discussion of newer technologies such as CD-RW, DVD, MP3, and new
  sound cards
- detailed information on mastering CD-ROMs
- more in-depth coverage of low-level sound programming, including the
MIDI devices (external and on-board FM and wavetable) and the
  new modular sound driver
- discussion of recent toolkits such as Gtk and Qt and graphical
  environments like KDE and GNOME
- alternate sound drivers (e.g. OSS and ALSA)
- digital cameras, scanners, and frame grabbers (including SANE)
- an updated list of multimedia applications and tools
- new example applications using more up-to-date toolkits
  (probably Qt and Gtk)
- possibly a companion CD-ROM of multimedia applications, sample media
  files, and documentation

If you haven't read the book, there is information at
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/multilinux/ that may give you enough
idea of what the book attempts to cover to allow you to suggest some
topics that should be included.

Again, if you have any comments, they would be greatly appreciated
(and will be acknowledged in the revised edition).

Jeff
