Hi,

I would like to buy a bidirectionnal sound card, able to record
and play at the same time. Someone told me that the
SoundBlaster 128 PCI was hardware-wise able to do that, and
also Linux supported with this feature.

What driver is to be used, BTW ? Is there any open-source (no cost
or not) driver fulfilling my needs ?

Thanks for any hints.

You will need to buy the OSS sound driver for bi-directional
sound... The free one does not have support for that. :o(

But, do they offer source code, or it's binary-only ? And if it's binary
only, do they offer free upgrade for, say, 5 years kernel releases ?

I believe it is binary only. Sorry-
You can go here for more information. They do have a demo, but you'll
have to reload it every few minutes or so. I have tried it, and am
going to buy it soon, myself, as I need this feature.

Yes

Both ALSA and the driver in the 2.2.x kernel series can do this.

That's called Full Duplex. Yes the Soundblaster 128 PCI supports it, so
does the Live! and i'm sure some other cards do as well. The soundblaster
live! is currently supported, though only with beta-drivers. I'm not sure
about the 128 PCI.

If you want to do true full-duplex, you should be able to use
(unless I'm horribly mistaken):

- Ensoniq ES1370/1371 (Sound Blaster PCI64/128, AudioPCI)
- S3 SonicVibes (not recommended)
- Trident 4DWave DX/NX
- CS423x based cards

For the Trident 4DWave cards, you'd need to use the ALSA drivers
(http://alsa.jcu.cz/), for the other cards you can use either
ALSA drivers or the standard kernel drivers.

It is binary only, but you can upgrade free for 5 years of kernel
releases.

I will also say about OpenSound: I have been 100% impressed with their
tech support. I have twice had to ask them questions and I had the correct
answer via email in less than 15 minutes.

Wrong. Try looking at the code. The CS423x, es137x, sonicvibes
drivers can do full duplex
