When I play MP3s on my SB64, there is a slight distortion. I don't know how
to explain how it sounds like. The SB16 I had previously was fine, except
for some noise, which the SB64 does not have.
Oh, and it sounds fine in The Other OS. Do you know of any problems with
the ess1371-driver in kernel 2.2.x? (Same problem with all versions I have
tested. 6 through 12.)

Try lowering both the PCM and the master volume settings in your mixer
program
and increase the volume at your amp, that might help.
