It is possible that your virtual root filesystem (the root_fs file) got 
damaged the first time. However try older UML's (2.4.24-1) which are more 
stable.

You mean the host or the guest? It is possible that it was its fault, but if 
you don't get the list of what you updated we can't help.

hi lucia, 

- make sure your rootfs is ok - fsck it from outside the uml
- recompile your uml-kernel after changing "-O2" to "-O1" in 
all makefiles. (see: https://p0lar.dot1q.net/SuSE-UML-2.6.6-instructions.html)
- try again
- report :)

lucia, 
didn`t you tell you converted your root_fs from ext2 to reiserfs ?
can you check, if /etc/fstab has an entry, still pointing to an ext2
filesystem ?
