I ported the host-skas3-2.6.7-v1.patch to the Fedora Core 2 kernel.

I used the latest fc2 2.6.6-1.435.2.3 kernel rpm.

I've tested it and I was able to run a 2.4.19 uml kernel with a redhat
7.2 rootfs. I wasn't able to make it leak memory by running the "while
true" bash line, but I don't understand exactly what triggers the leak so
it's likely I didn't properly test.

I don't do a lot of coding so I probably made some stupid mistakes. But
I needed skas3 on Fedora Core 2 so I went ahead and tried porting the
patch.

I just saw that BlaisorBlade sent a patch to fix the memory leak. I'll see
if I can add that to my modification.

Hopefully others may find this useful.

You can get the details here:
http://jdh.org/uml/

My patchfile is here:
http://jdh.org/uml/host-skas3-2.6.6-1.435.2.3.patch

I'm not hosting a modified src.rpm because it would just be too large a
file to have people downloading. But it's easy to modify the existing
src.rpm from fedora.

Let me know if this is useful or broken.

Keep up the good work,

-jdh

I should have checked the links before I sent the email.
You should be able to download the patches now.

Sorry,

Alexander Dalloz has done similar against a later kernel from
post-FC2. Perhaps we should consolidate forces :)

The kernel rpm is available in the testing section of ATrpms:

http://ATrpms.net/name/kernel-testing/fc2/

(the 1.494 based kernel).

BTW my personal wishlist would be a combined uml&skas3 patch for
~2.6.8rc1 (like blaisorblade did for 2.6.6). :)

uml-utilities have also been uploaded as rpms to ATrpms.

Well, it's a bit difficult to trigger; to the best of my understanding, it can
be triggered if UML is a child or grandchild of a multi-threaded process
using the TLS, i.e. Thread-Local Storage (as KDE Konsole) running either with
LinuxThreads support (i.e. either glibc is not NPTL-aware or is running onto
a 2.4 host kernel).

More technically, if any process modifies its LDT (by using the modify_ldt()
syscall), any of its child processes will have the LDT set, and if UML has
the LDT set it will then leak memory.

That said, I don't have time to look at it well but I don't see anything bad,
at a quick look; the port is not a simple rediff so there could be some
little changes needed, but if it runs Ok, I wouldn't worry.

For the SKAS + UML patch: it's easy to rebuild it from the splitout version
(you must browse the folders to find it, should be something like
patches/2.6.7-v1), but you can get by without it, so I'll build it only if I
get free time. I've not even had the time to join the SKAS - leak fix with
the rest of the patch!
