[uml-devel] Upcoming 64 bit uml coop

Good day, all,
	As I mentioned a month or so back, Jeff Dike has had some success 
with UML on the AMD64 architecture (Opteron and Athlon64).  As part of 
shaking out the bugs on that code, we have a new UML coop going up in the 
near future - codenamed "Ford".
	Each of the participants will split the cost of the core hardware 
purchase.  We're lucky enough to have two ISP's offering to host the box 
at no charge, so all we need to cover is the initial purchase and any 
upgrades.
	In exchange for that, each person gets a 64 bit virtual machine 
for their own use.  Because this is development code, there are no 
promises of perfect stability, so don't expect to run your storefront on 
it.

	After some discussion on the Ford mailing list, we've come down to 
these specs for the new box:

Processors: Opteron 240x2 OEM - $384
Memory: Gigaram DDR400x2 (2GB total) Lifetime warranty - $630
HD: Hitachi SATA 250Gbx2 - $384
Motherboard: Tyan K8S Pro - $515

and what you'd be willing to commit to for the purchase.  We plan to order
the hardware in the next week or two, but before we can do that we need to
know the final number of participants so we can get an appropriate amount
of hardware.  If more people come on we can get more ram, disk space,
and/or CPU.

	Since I wrote that project summary, a number of people have
written in, either committing a certain amount or at expressing interest
in the project.  We have enough contributors that this system will be
purchased - thanks to _everyone_!
	For some, a full share isn't appropriate at this time - no
problem!  I had mentioned (on the main web site,
http://www.stearns.org/ford/ford-project.html ) that we'd consider
offering "half-shares".  Jeff and I talked it over today and we think it
would be a postive way to include more people in the project.  A
half-share contributor would only need to come up with half the normal
amount, and would get 80M of memory, 4G of disk space, and a virtual
machine running at a nice level of 5.
	As always, if you're interested in taking part, please take a look 
at the above project summary and sign up for the mailing list at 
http://www.whoopis.com/mailman/listinfo/ford/ .  There's still time to 
take part - additional members will allow us to increase ram, improve the 
CPU, buy additional space, or simply bring down the cost of both shares 
and half-shares.
