[uml-devel] Missing exported symbols?

I'm still using the 2.6.8 uml patch release, and I'm getting heaps of errors 
complaining about unknown symbols.  In particular:
WARNING: ../mnt/ lib/modules/2.6.8-1um/kernel/fs/cifs/cifs.ko needs unknown 
symbol memmove
Which I need as I'm doing cifs development.  I saw an incremental 2.6.9-rc2 
patch that said it added heaps of exported symbols, is there anything for 
2.6.8?  Or is there a simple way to export the memmove symbol?

I guess compiling cifs into the kernel would fix the problem altogether, 
though wouldn't it...

I'm seeing the same error (memmove undefined) while trying to build UML 
2.6.8.1.  In fact, I'm finding that most of the os_* functions appear to 
be undefined, as well, but it looks like I can make that error go away 
if I simply disable the hostfs support.

I understand that hostfs is in the middle of a rewrite...what's the last 
2.6.x kernel with stable hostfs support?

FWIW, after removing support for externfs/hostfs and friends, the only 
remaining error is the missing memmove.  For example:

> WARNING: /tmp/myroot/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-1um/kernel/net/sunrpc/sunrpc.ko 
> needs unknown symbol memmove

Either 2.6.7-1um or the upcoming 2.6.9 release... you can try 2.6.9-rc2; nor 
2.6.9-rc3 (tested) nor 2.6.9-rc4 compile (I guess). However I'll fix the 
problem ASAP (I have just to send the patches).

Adding:

#undef __HAVE_ARCH_MEMMOVE

to include/asm-um/string.h (after the two #include statements) will 
force UML to use the memmove() defined in lib/string.c.  I don't know if 
this is the right solution or not, but it appears to resolve the missing 
symbol problem.

It does not change anything. memmove *is* defined by glibc. However, 
lib/string.c adds the "EXPORT_SYMBOL(memmove);" line, which is the correct 
line to add to arch/um/os-Linux/user_syms.c, after putting in the correct 
prototype.

This patch also contains (at this moment) the needed export:

http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/work/current/2.6/2.6.8.1-1um/patches/export

However, you could try the 2.6.9-rc2 kernel, or from 2.6.9-rc4-bk2 onwards. 
The patch, if needed, should apply as well, I guess (at least by hand). I 
think it was merged, however.
