Let me clarify the virtualbox thing. The machine in question is a VM 
host. It hosts several machines, one of which is my mail server, and 
another (openbsd) which acts as a gateway to the internet for all machines.
If i run this machine without virtualbox, then my entire network 
topology is off-line. While one could argue, that this is bad design, 
the alternative would be to use openbsd as a virtual host, but i haven't 
seen many tutorials on that. I also would like to run just one machine 
24/7 to keep a tap on the electricity consumption.

This machine also bridges several interfaces and acts as a hotspot for 
my wlan.

So i don't know whether virtualbox is responsible, but not running 
virtualbox is simply not an option.

I'm running
ii  linux-firmware   1.169         all
from artful.
No difference to the xenial version.

Then i'd have to patch those files so they build for 4.14 first.
I've seen patches, but still need to figure out how to get them applied 
in the build process.

I don't know if this is the case for all cases here, but IMHO
consistency with the source documents (which are actually listed in
many of the entries you're changing), is more important than
consistency within the file.

I don't have a machine with the same wireless device, so I can't hope
to reproduce the problem or test fixes.  I do have a slightly later
wireless device which uses the same driver, but I'm not confident it
would reproduce the problem, because (a) I've not seen the same stack
traces, (b) the WARN_ON relates to device response coded in firmware,
and my wireless device may use different firmware, and (c) it isn't
clear to me what you did to enable the problem.

You do have a machine, and you might do tests without virtualbox,
but as you say, this is not an option for you.

It may be more efficient to wait for your dkms packagers to catch up
so that the v4.14-rc6 or v4.14 kernel will work with your
package configuration.

For the reinstall prevention, the code I had added compares the
whole key. It turns out though that iwlwifi firmware doesn't
provide the TKIP TX MIC key as it's not needed in client mode,
and thus the comparison will always return false.

For client mode, thus always zero out the TX MIC key part before
doing the comparison in order to avoid accepting the reinstall
of the key with identical encryption and RX MIC key, but not the
same TX MIC key (since the supplicant provides the real one.)

With support for new AKM suites (example FILS-SHA256), the KEK length
can now be more than NL80211_KEK_LEN and the KCK length can be zero.
Add changes in cfg80211 to specify the length of KEK, and make KCK
optional. Make NL80211_REKEY_DATA_KEK as NLA_BINARY to enforce a maximum
length check.

i have my own v3, but will wait for your version to check how much its 
different from mine

i'm also able to test gmp / aes 256 using 2 QCA 9984 devices

Allow run-time suspend when interface is down, keep card alive when
interface is up.
If driver is in wmi only or debug_fw mode run-time PM won't suspend.

FW capabilities are currently retrieved only during module
initialization, but userspace can replace the firmware while
interface is down, so refresh the FW capabilities when
interface is up (after FW is loaded) to ensure driver
functionality matches the loaded FW.

The current length check:
sizeof(cmd) + len > r->entry_size
will allow very large values of len (> U16_MAX - sizeof(cmd))
and can cause a buffer overflow. Fix the check to cover this case.
In addition, ensure the mailbox entry_size is not too small,
since this can also bypass the above check.

In case of interface down, radio is turned off but PCIe mastering is
not cleared.
This can cause unexpected PCIe access to the shutdown device.
Fix this by clearing PCIe mastering also in case interface is down

Currently suspend time statistics are showed through debugfs.
Remove time statistics in suspend state since the timing may
not be accurate in that state.

WoWLAN is supported in RS9113 device through GPIO pin2.
wowlan config frame is internally sent to firmware in mac80211
suspend handler. Also beacon miss threshold and keep-alive time
values are increased to avoid un-necessary disconnection with AP.

We are disabling of interrupts from firmware in freeze handler.
Also setting power management capability KEEP_MMC_POWER to make
device wakeup for WoWLAN trigger.
At restore, we observed a device reset on some platforms. Hence
reloading of firmware and device initialization is performed.
