Hello,
I would like to report a continuous PCIe AER correctable error flood from a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565/AR9565 wireless adapter. The flood occurs even though the adapter is completely idle (interface down, never associated, no traffic).
System
------
- Board: Intel CoffeeLake desktop, H370 chipset
- OS / kernel: Ubuntu 26.10, Linux 7.3.0-9-generic (distro kernel 7.3.0-9.9)
- Device: 02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 [168c:0036] (rev 01), driver ath9k
- Root port: 00:1c.7 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel 300/C240 Series Chipset Family PCIe Root Port #8 [8086:a33f] (rev f0)
- Link: Speed 2.5GT/s, Width x1; LnkCap: ASPM L0s L1; LnkCtl: ASPM L0s L1 Enabled, CommClk+
Symptom
-------
A sustained stream of correctable AER messages starts right after boot and never stops, at a steady rate of about 43 events per minute (measured over 60 seconds on an idle system). Every event produces two dmesg lines, and each line is additionally written to the systemd journal and to syslog/kern.log by rsyslog, which accumulates well over 100 MB of duplicate log entries per day on this otherwise idle machine.
Sample dmesg lines (steady state, timestamps ~3 minutes after boot):
[ 200.083520] pcieport 0000:00:1c.7: AER: Correctable Error message received from 0000:02:00.0
[ 200.083552] ath9k 0000:02:00.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Correctable
[ 203.228658] pcieport 0000:00:1c.7: AER: Correctable Error message received from 0000:02:00.0
[ 203.228692] ath9k 0000:02:00.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Correctable
Representative full lines from /var/log/kern.log (same boot):
pcieport 0000:00:1c.7: AER: Multiple Correctable error message received from 0000:02:00.0
ath9k 0000:02:00.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Correctable, type=Physical Layer, (Receiver ID)
ath9k 0000:02:00.0: [ 0] RxErr (First)
ath9k 0000:02:00.0: device [168c:0036] error status/mask=00000001/00002000
Workarounds tested
------------------
- kernel parameter pci=noaer: silences the flood completely
- unloading the ath9k module: silences the flood completely
- no functional impact observed; all errors are correctable and the link keeps working
Notes
-----
- This is a stock distro kernel; I have not bisected. The same machine previously ran Ubuntu 26.04 (kernel 7.0.0-38) but I did not check the logs at that time, so I cannot say whether this is a regression or has always been there at this rate.
- The adapter is idle and the interface is DOWN, yet the error rate is steady, which suggests a link-level / ASPM related cause rather than something traffic related.
- I can provide lspci -vvx output, AER sysfs counters (/sys/bus/pci/devices/.../aer_dev_*), or test patches on request.
Thanks for looking into this.
