I would much rather prefer if the person who actually submitted the bug report to (or changed the status at) the sourceforge site would CC this list in person. The autofeed does not show how we may possibly inquire further on the report itself. For example, the last report about parted requiring reboot or something seemed like more of a generic Linux issue or just that the app is broken, and I may perhaps want to ask for details. Then, who should I send the question to? [Ok, I can find your email address and others' if I work at it, but that's not my point.] If anything, is it possible to stop the autofeed now and instead to encourage whoever uses the site to CC their words to linuxppc-dev? I just visited the URL (https://sourceforge.net/bugs/?func=detailbug&bug_id=131861&group_id=8234) and typed in the note. It was more meant for Tom than general discussion, but while that seems like the right place for concise bits of infomation, I agree that general (long-winded) discussion about bugs makes more sense on lppc-dev... -Hollis ** Sent via the linuxppc-dev mail list. Hi Takashi, If you are on the dev list I would hope you are interested in bug reports. This forwarding has been in place since last year so folks could keep in tune with the SourceForge site. > I would much rather prefer if the person who actually submitted the bug > report to (or changed the status at) the sourceforge site would CC this > list in person. I disagree. Newbies don't necessary know about the linuxppc-dev list much less the commit list much less where folks hang out in IRC etc etc. People who take the time to test and post bug reports are valueable! Sure not every bug is a real problem but that's the life of a developer. > The autofeed does not show how we may possibly inquire further on the > report itself. [Ok, I can find your email address and > others' if I work at it, but that's not my point.] At the VERY bottom of the bug report is a link that you can click on to get more information about the bug. From there you can get the sf id of the people involved in the bugs report and fix. Recall that sourceforge user ids are email addresses. so userid@users.sourceforge.net as an example. > If anything, is it possible to stop the autofeed now and instead to > encourage whoever uses the site to CC their words to linuxppc-dev? Sourceforge doesn't have that feature. You can't cc a bug report somewhere. But that's not to say that those kinds of options couldn't be added. I know some of the VA Linux guys... sounds like a good suggestion. At the moment I am against stopping the auto feed as then folks who are not monitoring the sourceforge site miss out on both new bugs as well as fixes to current bugs. Completely cutting off the flow of information to me isn't the answer. -- Regards, Tom -------------------------------------------------------------- Linux Guy "My heart is human, my blood is boiling, gall@rochcivictheatre.org my brain IBM" -- Mr Roboto, Styxx tom_gall@vnet.ibm.com ** Sent via the linuxppc-dev mail list. As I said, I do not like the way things are fed to the linuxppc-dev list. [...] > I disagree. I have absolutely no argument against your idea of newbies and bug reports. I assumed those were well understood, already. [...] > At the VERY bottom of the bug report is a link that you can click on > to get more information about the bug. Sorry, my machine does not work well with sourceforge, and it usually takes a few minutes or much longer for a page of sourceforge to load in readable form. I wish to just reply to the bug report via email to get more detail or to give some suggestions to whoever posted the message without invoking a web browser because the bug report came through email. That way seems natural to me. [...] > so userid@users.sourceforge.net as an example. As I recall (perhaps incorrectly), having userid@users.sourceforge.net as an alias to one's email address was not automatic when I signed up last year. Is it now the case that everyone who signs up for sourceforge.net (automatically) supplies a valid email address for the userid@users.sourceforge.net thing and the alias is active by default? If so, ok, fine then. I hate to get bounces when I spend a substantial amount of time composing whatever I have to say. [...] > Completely cutting off the flow of information to me isn't the answer. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Strong language. That has never been my intention. From your point of view, the autofeed is convenient for everybody. I'm only saying that it's not convenient for me. I'm lazy, and I want to hit a reply button (or delete button) and be done with it. Strange - I'm pretty sure I've never seen a bug report of that kind show up on this list before today. But I'll check my archive. I'd actually prefer having a linuxppc-bugs list separate from linuxppc-dev if possible. I'm not against automatic forwards, I'd just keep bug tracking and discussion separate. For now I'll filter on the Subject: header to direct these bug reports to a separate folder, but a separate list would make more sense from my perspective. Just my 0.02 euro.
