Thanks for the point of view.
It seems that SDP concept comes from Microsoft Sockets Direct Technology
and be used on Intel Infiniband architecture.

* Linux on Virtex-II Pro P20 development board...

Hello everyone!

I've just started trying to get the Linux (2.6.8.1) kernel to run on the 
above mentioned board (or, specifically, a PPC405 on the Xilinx 
Virtex-II Pro 2VP20). I just figured I'd ask around and see if any of 
you have got this board running and then what kernel modifications where 
necessary and IP blocks (from the development kit) you've used. At the 
moment I'm primarily interested in the PPC and a serial port, later on 
the TP port will be useful as well.

I've previously ported the 2.4.x kernel to Cirrus Logic EP7312 (ARM) 
chip, but that was some years ago and with the new kernel, chip and 
structure of the PPC arch of the kernel I'm a bit disoriented. Any help 
would be greatly appreciated!

Is that supposed to work? 2.6.11-rc2-bk10 sleeps ok on a pismo, but -rc3
just does nothing when closing the lid.

Jakob,

Why are you using 2.6.8.1 which is rather old and doesn't have
any Virtex-II Pro support?

Virtex-II Pro support in 2.6 is very minimalistic at the moment:

Nevertheless, it should be enough to bring up your board
with 16x50 UART and ramdisk (I mean adding your platform using
ML300 as a template).

This stuff works for me in the following configuration:

Hi all,

Working with a board using hdlc over SCC channel (852T) and kernel 2.4.21,
in the cpm reset code in arch/ppc/8xx_io/commproc.c it's like:

should just be around the cpm_load_patch command?
The CONFIG_UCODE_PATCH seems to point this to be i2c/spi patch, but
shouldn't a reset go to cpm in anycase?

Not sure what "it" you mean.  The current kernel code does not have the 
third parm.  I'm not sure about the latest binutils, but 2.15.92.0.2 is 
what a vendor wants to build on.

Yes, probably the 8260 code evolved from the 8xx code?
Personally I like to code so logic is reset'd to a known base
even if that means we have to go through some setup steps again.

Of course, there could be a reason why it is like it is
and that's why I sent out the question...

We have a problem where hdlc sometimes seems to lookup, when the ppc
reboots it doesn't helps but after a while it is reseted by harder
means (pulling the resetline) which helps. Testing the change right now,
but it can take long time before it happens...

It seems the author wants to reset the cpm only when microcode

Hi,

We are using the 2.4.20 PPC kernel running on the TQM859T module.

A lot of this kind of modules always hangs during the boot,
something like this:

      CPM UART driver version 0.03+
      ttyS00 at 0x0280 is a SMC
                           ^^^^^
                             THE SYSTEM HANGS HERE :-(

Deeper inspecting the uart.c, we recognized that the SMC (or SCC)
hardware related to the console will be (re-)configured multiple times in:

    (1) serial_console_setup():  early setup with small BD tables

    (2) rs_8xx_init(): bigger BD tables; without interrupts

    (3) startup(): with interrupts

The re-configuring (1->2, 2->3) will be performed on-the-fly,
without disabling the hardware.

According to Motorola this is _NOT_ allowed and dangerous.

For the SMC, it is suggested to run a 'STOP TX' CPCR command followed
by disabling RX/TX in SMCMR (TEN/REN), in order to stop the controller
correctly.

I suggest to do this inside rs_8xx_init() and startup() as shown
in the patch below.
The SCC is not addressed by the patch.

With this fix, the modules hanging before can boot now.

It seems to be the personal preference of the last person that
make changes and checked in a patch.

Years ago, we used to always reset the cpm to eliminate
any microcode patches that may have been installed by the
boot rom.  We never knew what may be there, so drivers
would fail.

Later, I added a bunch of kgdb/xmon support for early kernel
debugging.  Due to this, we didn't want to reset the cpm because
we would rely on the boot rom initialization of the serial port
for communication.  The early serial functions just track down
the BDs and use them, regardless of how they were set up.
Lots of kernel code is run prior to the Linux configuration of the
serial ports, and we wanted to debug before that.

Now, I see this microcode patch again.  This is an old piece
of code, or perhaps a recent update to it.

So, the configuration issue is whether you want to run kdgb
or xmon for early kernel debugging.  If so, you don't want to
reset the cpm.  If there are microcode patches loaded by by
a boot rom, we probably want to reset the cpm.  If you are
loading your own patches, you must reset the cpm.  If you
want to run kgdb or xmon and load your own microcode
patches ... well, you have a challenge :-)

There may be some configuration logic that meets most
requirements, but it isn't going to be proper for everyone.
You may have to locally edit the files for your purpose,
which is true of several cpm related drivers.  You have the
source, use it! ;-)

would you please read Documentation/CodingStyle and
try sending the patch again?

Although it doesn't make too much difference in this case,
2.4.20 is pretty old and it helps to get patches against
the latest kernels.

look at it.  What is the speed of the processor and the
baud rate?

i'm trying to get 2.6.11-rc2 to run on my powerbook g4, cpuinfo below. i found 
the discussion and patch for the adb-probe hang which i experienced. now i'm 
finding the ide subsystem is loosing interrupt's talking to the harddisk, hda. 
i attached my kernel config. i looked in the email archive and didn't find 
anything relevant. any suggestions would be appreciated. i delevelop NFSv4 on 
linux, and need the latest kernels....

It's normal, the kernel is waiting for the video driver to do a platform
call to indicate it supports sleep/wakeup on this model. The video
driver updates haven't been pushed yet. This concerns laptops with
nVidia, r128 and radeon chips. The former, we don't know how to wake
them up yet, the r128 patch is trivial and should go in, the radeonfb
patch is still beeing debated on.

Since it doesn't happen on x86, I first thought it was because of the ppc 
specific init of the device_tree, but commenting this out just lets it 
happen somewhere else. It seems schedule is called when it returns from a 
syscall, which seems normal behaviour to me, but the recent 
preempt_disable() in start_kernel makes the scheduler give these warnings.
So what's happening? 

Also, I think this is already know for a while:
/lib/modules/2.6.11-rc3/kernel/drivers/video/vga16fb.ko needs unknown 
symbol vgacon_remap_base

Hi,

I have an IBM eBony board without any documents. Since IBM pulled off
all the documents related ppc440 after they sold the business to AMCC,
googling cannot find any documents about eBony schematics, board's
user manual and evaluation board kit user's manual.

If there are some people happen to have these documents, would you
like to share them with me?

I want to wipe off the Rom monitor and program u-boot to it. But
before doing that I have to assure that I can recover the board with
Rom Monitor. Unfortunately I don't the binary code either. Would you
like to send me a copy if you have it?
