This patch series removes the need for include/asm-ppc in the ARCH=powerpc
build for ppc32. They exist in the following git tree:
master.kernel.org:/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/galak/powerpc.git for-2.6.24
posting here for everyone else to see.
Updated to fix ans-lcd driver building, some hydra drivers that got broken
and the fact that mpc7448_hpcn.h still included ppcboot.h

Remove includes of files that existed in arch/ppc that we dont need in
arch/powerpc anymore. The following includes were removed:

<asm/bootinfo.h>
<asm/ppcboot.h>
<asm/ppc_sys.h>
<asm/residual.h>
<asm/m8260_pci.h>
This also caused platforms/embedded6xx/mpc7448_hpc2.h to no longer be
needed and thus removed.

I'm considering to remove the 1080i modes from ps3av_preferred_modes[], as
many HDMI screens seem to have problems with interlaced modes.
That would decrease the size of psav_monitor_quirks[] (note that I currently

In addition 1080i looks bad on most screens that support it anyway.

In contrast to this, many screens (like yours) seem to support 1080p, while
they don't advertise it. So perhaps we need .set* fields in
psav_monitor_quirks[], too? I'm a bit reluctant to do that, as many vendors
are not very specific when it comes to the monitor_name field (my collection
has e.g. `SAMSUNG', `SyncMaster', `SONY TV').

Your right my screen supports 1080p but it leaves me with a message on

Yes kernel is written to flash memory. I added
ps3-wip/ps3av-vesa-stripes-workaround.diff to my source tree, the
message persists, even using Geoff's git tree with my .config file and
running oldconfig didn't change the behavior. I'll append my .config
file. The message is the very first line printed at kernel boot.

What would be the point of doing that? I would think we want the
opposite, in that we want to reuse as much of arch/powerpc during
arch/ppc compiles as possible. Sort of shows how much is "left" to
port.
Also, making arch/ppc compile stand-alone again would be "wasted" work,
since it's going to die anyway.

I know you could get the PS3AV_CID_AV_VIDEO_DISABLE_SIG message in some cases
when booting immediately into a VESA mode.
I see you have
CONFIG_CMDLINE="quiet sysrq=1 panic=42 video=ps3fb:mode:0"
Does it go away if you remove the `video=...'?

The point would be to keep the two trees separate, so that one doesn't
need to worry about breaking arch/ppc when making a change to arch/powerpc.

Hello All!
I'm beginning development with a Xilinx PPC/FPGA. I've now gotten my
feet wet and have a few successes and a few head scratches.
I have a Xilinx ML403 dev board. I ran the Monta-Vista Linux 2.4 demo.
good.
Now for my own attempt.
(Please reply if anything I'm doing is incorrect)
I found a pre-built toolchain for my i686 Debian host with
gcc-4.1.1 + glibc6. I downloaded kernel 2.6.23-rc3 after reading
several posts on this list about the ML403 and drivers in this kernel
version.
Problem 1: The kernel did not have the correct memory information. I
noticed in 'embed_config.c' that the board params are hard coded,
however my kernel was not linking with that version of embed_config().
It was linking with embed_config() in 'misc-embedded.c'
Did I miss a config parameter in the kernel config??
My kernel now boots and mounts the MontaVista rootfs on the SystemACE
Flash!!! :)
Problem 2: Build my own rootfs.
If I try to build my own programs (busybox and bash at this point) with
shared libc using the same glibc from my toolchain, I get an "Illegal
instruction" error. Is my glibc not compatible with my Xilinx PPC 405??
If I try to build a rootfs with debian ppc packages I have the same
"Illegal instruction" error.
Question 1:
Do I need a special glibc for the Xilinx PPC 405????
Does a normal PPC glibc have more "advanced" instructions compiled in
that will not work on a Xilinx PPC 405??
Question 2:
Is it true that the xparameters.h file produced by Xilinx EDK is not
compatible with the current 2.6.23 kernel?? It appears that if I change
params (addresses or IRQ's) in my Xilinx EDK I need to hand edit the
xparameters.h in the kernel source tree. True?
BTW: My Xilinx EDK is version 9.1i with full ISE 9.1i.
I'm looking forward to helping the Linux on Xilinx PPC effort!!

Make sure you're building glibc with soft-fp, or make sure you have
CONFIG_MATH_EMULATION enabled in your kernel. The PPC 405 doesn't have
an FPU.

The current code assumes "foo-bar" must always be compatible with a node
compatible with "foo", which breaks device trees where this is not so.
The "case" part is also wrong according to Open Firmware, but it's more
likely to have drivers and/or device trees depending on it, and thus
needs to be handled more carefully.

1. Fix get_immrbase() to use ranges, rather than reg.
It is not always the case that the SoC's first reg property points
to the beginning of the entire SoC block.
2. Update the way get_brgfreq() finds things in the device tree.
It now uses names that are less namespace polluting. The old names
are supported until all boards are converted.
3. "size" is changed from unsigned int to int, to match what
of_get_property() expects.

I guess it depends on what you consider 'easier'.
Signals have potential race conditions, and so using
select() is safer. I find it 'easier' to have less
problems, so would spend the time to make the server
use select().
But, you are free to ignore this advice. :)

There are potential race conditions. I'm not sure if this
problem was 2.4 kernel specific, or 2.6 kernel specific,
or signals specific. I think its signals specific.
A web search should yield more info on this. Try googling
'signals race condition', and it looks like its a problem
still.
So it depends on whether your server is running in
a critical, and secure system, as to whether you want
to stick with signals.

If SIGIO is sufficient for you, then just use the driver
fasync() call-back mechanism. The example code I referred
to has an example. If its not clear to you, I can
explain it.
If you're having to modify some corner of the kernel not
used by many, then I'm sure your solution is not the
correct one, and you won't get anyone helping you
when things go wrong.
So, take the experience of others; re-write the server
to use signals. If the server was well written to start
with you should be able to call the 'signal handler'
function after returning from your select() call with
the handle ready. It shouldn't be that hard.
Come on, you've just returned from holiday, it should
be no sweat to code up a new server :)
