Hi Ravi,
I think dumping only the first couple kilbytes is not enough to be sure.
Even a single byte later on can corrupt the image. You need to make sure
that the complete image is correct.
I don't know about the TLB setup changes.

Hi
Im having trouble debugging a C++ app through eclipse using gdbserver
running on my ML410 board. I could debug a standard C app no problem but
now I get a :
Cannot access memory at address 0x10010008
The program Im trying to debug is just using a couple cin and cout functions
nothing too complicated. I think I have the shared libraries on Eclipse
pointing to the root file system image on my host computer, i used the
command
set solib-absolute-prefix /opt/crosstool/ml410_rfs
in a gdb command file that eclipse calls, is there anything else I need to
add to it?

You're not supposed to nest a spin_lock_bh inside a spin_lock_irq.
fs_ioctl() does this anyway, hence the warning.

while (cmpxchg(&atomic_read(&debugger_active), 0, (procid + 1)) != 0) {
a) cmpxchg isn't available on all architectures
b) we can't just go and take the address of atomic_read()'s return value!
c) that's pretty ugly-looking stuff anyway.

These are guarded by !PPC_MERGE in Kconfig, so they won't be built in
arch/powerpc. And we all know we're waiting for the ibm_newemac driver
to show up for arch/powerpc... ;)

ndfc.c doesn't even need asm/ibm44x.h in arch/ppc. It could be removed
safely. However, the build will fail on arch/powerpc because of the
call to ioremap64. So we should guard it for now, until I get the
flash stuff working on Bamboo and come up with something better.
The patch below fixes these, similar to how drivers/mtd/maps/ebony.c is
guarded.

These drivers are specific to 4xx support in arch/ppc at the moment. Make
sure they don't get built on arch/powerpc.

Right, maybe it's not the best name, but as long as you separate your
memory access types, you can think of it as a real write barrier, just
for mmio accesses (well uncached access really).

Yeah, they keep threatening to use this instead, but I'm not sure how
easy it would be. Also they may have more devices/drivers to worry
about than sn2, so maybe changing over would mean too much driver
debugging (well auditing really since it's not that hard to know where
to put them). Irix actually had an io_unlock() routine that did this
implicitly, but iirc that was shot down for Linux...

Well, it is, but it isn't. Not on its own - but together with a "normal"

No. wmb orders all *normal* writes coming out of a single CPU.
It may not do anything at all for "uncached" IO writes that aren't part of
the cache coherency, and that are handled using totally different queues
(both inside and outside of the CPU)!
Now, on x86, the CPU actually tends to order IO writes *more* than it
orders any other writes (they are mostly entirely synchronous, unless the
area has been marked as write merging), but at least on PPC, it's the
other way around: without the cache as a serialization entry, you end up
having a totally separate queueu to serialize, and a regular-memory write
barrier does nothing at all to the IO queue.
So think of the IO write queue as something totally asynchronous that has
zero connection to the normal write ordering - and then think of mmiowb()
as a way to *insert* a synchronization point.
In particular, the normal synchronization primitives (spinlocks, mutexes
etc) are guaranteed to synchronize only normal memory accesses. So if you
do MMIO inside a spinlock, since the MMIO writes are totally asyncronous
wrt the normal memory accesses, the MMIO write can escape outside the
spinlock unless you have somethign that serializes the MMIO accesses with
the normal memory accesses.
So normally you'd see "mmiowb()" always *paired* with a normal memory
barrier! The "mmiowb()" ends up synchronizing the MMIO writes with the
normal memory accesses, and then the normal memory barrier acts as a
barrier for subsequent writes.
Of course, the normal memory barrier would usually be a "spin_unlock()" or
something like that, not a "wmb()". In fact, I don't think the powerpc
implementation (as an example of this) will actually synchronize with
anything *but* a spin_unlock().

I agree that it probably isn't a "write barrier" per se. Think of it as a
"tie two subsystems together" thing.
(And it doesn't just matter on sn2. It also matters on powerpc64, although
I think they just set a flag and do the *real* sync in the spin_unlock()
path).
Side note: the thing that makes "mmiowb()" even more exciting is that it's
not just the CPU, it's the fabric outside the CPU that matters too. That's
why the sn2 needs this - but the powerpc example shows a case where the
ordering requirement actually comes from the CPU itself.

This patch adds the clrsetbits() macro, which is used to set and clear
multiple bits in a single read-modify-write operation. Specify the bits to
clear in the 'clear' parameter and the bits to set in the 'set' parameter.
These macros can also be used to set a multiple-bit bit pattern using a mask,
by specifying the mask in the 'clear' parameter and the new bit pattern in the
'set' parameter. The 'type' parameter is used to specify the size and endian.

I'd rather not add a new entry in ops just for that; it's more of an
attribute of the dtb format that name is handled specially. IIUC, on
real OF you'd use the same code for both.
Plus, something might come along that needs to dynamically look for
either name or something else. It's more flexible this way.

Firmware would not deliver two interrupt numbers in device-tree any more
but only one, for correctable ECC, because uncorrectable ECC from now
handles firmware itself.
Changes in the axonram module are necessary because in the old version, if
it is not allowed to fetch the second interrupt number from device-tree,
it interpretes this as an error case and exits.

The Cell Broadband Engine has a method of injecting a
system-reset-exception from an external source into the
operating system, which should trigger the regular behaviour
of entering xmon or kdump.
Unfortunately, the exception handler cannot distinguish it from
other interrupt causes by the SRR1 register, which gets used
for this on Power 6 and others.
IBM Blade servers that want to support triggering the
system reset exception using a pinhole button in the front
panel therefore use an extra register to determine the
reset cause.

Legacy device tree used the reg property for the physical id of an spe.
On newer device tree layouts the reg property contains the "correct" value
in the reg attribute. So there has been intoduced the "physical-id" on newer
devicetree layouts. The id is stored by spu_manage into the spu struct as spe_id.
cbe_thermal has been changed to use the spu->spe_id.
There's no need for the thermal code has to check devicetree attributes for itself.

Hi Paul,
A few bugs came up on the cell platform when testing on the lastest
prototype version of a future hardware. The first three patches are
all meant to track changes required for the fixes that have gone
into the firmware. Patch 4 is for a bug that showed up during testing,
and the final patch is the defconfig update that you probably want
to do for the other platforms as well.
Please forward for inclusion in 2.6.23!

I have at least one more driver that will use it, for the ICAP, and
joachim's AC97 driver should use it too.
In any event, my intention with all of this is to start small to figure
out how
to do it... Plus I think it will be much easier to manage our tree if
basic
changes like this are merged long before arch/microblaze.

Hi Wolfgang,
The image is getting loaded from the flash. I am able to hook up
BDI2000 and dump various locations.
I dumped first few kilo byte locations of the image and looks no
corruption.
I also tried this on another board and l see the same behaviour.
Also the board I am using is an existing product but it is running 2.4.18
kernel.
Hardware of our next gen product will be based on the existing board but
it will run 2.6.21 kernel.
So to speed software development I am using the existing product as the
refernce and trying to put 2.6.21.
Other paculiar thing that I have seen is Once I reset the power to chasis
or pull the card out and put it back in it gets stuck at "Now booting the
kernel" stage and upon hooking BDI2000 it looks like it hangs in
early_init function at the call to memset_io(PTRRELOC(&__bss_start), 0,
_end - __bss_start). Only way to get it back working is by burning a 2.4
kernel rebooting the card and again burning the 2.6 one..Any idea what may
be happening.....
The only difference i see in 2.4.x initial code and 2.6.x init code is the
wired tlb setup in head_4xx.S. Do you know why the wired tlb setup code
got removed from 2.6 ??

Hi Ravi,
my first guess would be that there is a problem with your RAM. Could be
the RAM timing or just a bad RAM chip.
Try to run the image on another board, see if it works there. If not you
can check the RAM timing. Given that you have a custom board there could
be some design issues.
Where are you loading the image from? Maybe there is a problem in
transferring the image into RAM so the image download corrupts the data?
