I'm not sure I understand. To clarify I have an FPGA connected via the PCI bus
which implements several peripherals, I've implemented device drivers for.
Currently I am calling ioremap() to get a virtual address corresponding to the
PCI devices. Then I use ___raw_writeN / ___raw_readN for reading/writing data
via the PCI bus to the FPGA registers. From looking at io.h I believe this
method is safe with regard to out of order execution.

Can you verify if my understanding is correct, or let me know if I need to add
memory barriers?

That could have worked - however lpar management already uses
the same sysfs interface to poke. The current semantics make the lpar
vcpu deconfig state the platform default assuming that it will be used for
lpar management. The only clean way to do this without breaking lpar
management stuff is to add another state - "inactive" and retain backward
compatibility.

Well, I've always wondered why we just don't put the probe in the 8250
driver... I proposed it on the list a while back and there was no
serious objection, but then forgot about it :-)
We should do it, and check if the result is sane (looks like a standard
speed). If it is, we should then just used it.

Out of order execution != out of order storage. ioremap() will give you
guarded space which means it cannot be speculatively accessed for
example, and you do get -some- guarantees but not that your stores are
going to hit the device in order, nor that your loads are going to be
performed until the CPU actually use the result of the load, which can
be delayed beyond a store.

Interesting. So IIUC if I were to use ioremap and then bit bang bus cycles using
readN() / writeN() I would need to add memory barrier to ensure the order of the
load and store operations does not change. Is my understanding correct? If so
what are the recommended macros/functions for adding memory barriers, or are
there preferred functions to use in place of ioremap() and readN()/writeN?
PS I've looked in Documentation/ in the 2.6.30 Linux kernel tree for more
information, but I was unable to find any. If there are any example drivers or
documentation that you know of on this topic I'd be quite interested if you
could point me to it.

Only if you use the __raw variants. readN/writeN already provide full
barriers, including barriers against leakage outside of locks and
barriers vs. cacheable accesses (MMIO vs. DMA) and thus are slow.
If you use the raw variants, it then depends whether your code is going
to be ppc specific, in which case you can manually use things like
eieio() etc... or not in which case ... it's harder :-) You can always
use rmb/wmb/mb but those are more heavyweight than just an eieio
There's iobarrier_r/w/rw, dunno if those are generic tho.

ioremap + readN / writeN will give you fully ordered behaviour. It's
only when you try to be sneaky or speedy and use the __raw variants
that you have to be more careful.

FPGA is connected via x2 PCI-E lane. FPGA is identified
during PCI scan and is visible via lspci.

However when I attempt to access FPGA memory my mmapping it in userspace
the read hangs. The same happens in kernel space. Does it happen because
FPGA memory is marked as disabled, or because FPGA code is doing
something wrong ?
Another question is what can cause PCI device memory be marked as
disabled.

Can you access the device in u-boot? That would possible tell you if
the HW is functioning or not.

Good question, no idea how lspci decided to print [disabled]. Take a
look at lspci source and see :)

Maybe the memory enable in the PCI command register isn't set ?
If you don't have a kernel driver that sets it (by calling
pci_enable_device) and u-boot doesn't set it then it's going
to be off and you'll get hangs or machine checks trying to
access the device...
Just an idea...

I'm trying to startup the latest kernel image (2.6.31) for my mpc8572ds
machine. I have downloaded the kernel's source code at kernel.org and i
have compiled it with a native ppc compiler using make uImage.
At this moment I have in my system my uImage and u-boot-2009-08 programmed
in the flash memory. The bootargs are "root=/dev/sda6 rw
console=ttyS0,115200" and the dtb file was generated by the script dtc
included in the same kernel source code.
I have done:

Thanks for tracking the commit down. I've tried it today but your config
has everything as modules and that didn't work out very well with my
netboot setup. I'll dig a bit more tomorrow.
It's probably my fault for not properly getting the time to test Tejun
patches... oh well, that's what being too busy does to you.

Use the compatible value. That's what it is there for. Only use the
extended register format if "fsl,mpc5200b-psc-spi" is present in the
compatible list.

Hi,
I wasn't aware that MPC5200 differ from MPC5200B in this regard. I also
couldn't find any MPC5200 user manual on Freescale's webpage.
Is there a #define that I can use to distinguish between the two
processor variants? Querying the PVR register is not a nice solution
because the chip-select activate function is called in some scenarios
quite often.

I think you should have two different functions for calculation, one for 5200
and one for 5200B. During init query the device tree for 'fsl,mpc5200-psc-spi'
or 'fsl,mpc5200b-psc-spi' and make the driver use the proper function.
(BTW I haven't checked for further differences between 5200 and 5200B; there
may be more)

Good idea, and I agree that the use of the workarea/work_ints is a bit vague.
The current way works because sometimes its easier to think of the workarea
as a char buffer and sometimes as a int buffer.
I'll try to come up with something to make the parsing of the workarea buffer
easier to understand.

lspci has a -x and -xxx options to print the bytes in the
PCI configuration space header. You should use that to
see what the settings are, and then you'll be able
to interpret what disabled means.

The memory, non-prefetchable, and size are decoded from bits in
the base address registers. I'm pretty sure there is an
enabled/disabled bit in there too. Thats probably where your
lspci output is getting it from.
I suspect that you could perform a configuration space
write to enable that bit, or that the FPGA initialization
code should be setting that bit. It really depends on
what the PCIe component inside the FPGA was designed to
do.
For example, on the MPC8349EA processor configured as a
peripheral board, the PCI bridge can come up enabled, or
disabled. If the bridge is disabled, then it is up to the
PowerPC processor core (U-boot code) to enable the PCI
interface prior to the host CPU BIOS configuring the base
addresses in the interface. Its possible you've missed
something like this when you configured the core,
eg. an 'enable on boot option' (I haven't used the PCIe
core, so have no idea if this is an option - but you
could submit an Altera service request).
Since you're playing with an FPGA, you should be able to
connect Altera's logic analyzer core to the PCI interface
and capture traffic as well, so that could be used to
debug your problem.
