Greetings;
I need to whip up some more horsepower to run emc.
This motherboard, which I could populate from the one that
died a while back:
Mach Speed V2MDMP KM266 Pro Socket A
Has a builtin video, called UniCrome in the propaganda.
Are there usable linux drivers for this one?

Yes, they are quite good actually:
http://unichrome.sourceforge.net/
The biggest problem is that the via DRM module is not in the kernel yet.
You will have to install it from dri.sourceforge.net CVS. It was in a
recent -mm release but was dropped and unfortunately the current version
doesn't work with the -mm kernel. Andrew Morton & others have said they
will try to get it back in soon.

Unforch, this implies its for 2.6 kernels. The machine in question
will be running 2.5.25-adeos, an rtai conversion kernel. I'll take a
look and see if it might be buildable for that. Thanks for the links.

If you don't care much about video performance the via embedded video
works fine for most applications... it's derived from their s3 aquisition.

I did place the order for the board, and a cheap Chaintech Gforce 5200
video card in case the onboard doesn't work out for this app. The
existing card, a 4 meg rage based card, apparently is not well
supported by xorg's code, if the blanker is allowed to kick in, the
recovery when the mouse is moved or a key is hit, is to a totally
trashed screen & one must find the pager and switch screens to effect
a redraw. Minor detail, but a pita anyway.
Thanks a bunch.

An external video card will give you materially better performance
anyway and if you are doing real time stuff help in a few other ways.

Thanks Alan, and I suspected as much.
I did order a chaintech knockoff of a gforce 5200 to go with it.

Is this one of those 'shared memory' video chipsets then? And is it like the
old days on the Amiga where some of the system ram is dual ported so that
video/cpu don't contend the bus for memory access, or are you implying that
they do contend, and that imposes a performance hit?
Or none of the above? :)
