First post to the list, hope I get this right...

2.4.0-ac5 oopses very early on in the boot process. I can't get the
actual oops off of the machine, but this is what i managed to type into
my laptop:

It's an Athlon Tbird 1.1GHz on an ASUS A7V. The oops happens before the
framebuffer kicks in, but that's all I can tell about the position of
it. And no, I don't have any way to connect this machine to my laptop
other than my network card, so I can't capture the entire oops. Sorry.

Oh, and my .config is attached.

Nathan

Could you please run this through ksymoops on your machine.
Depending on which distribution you're using, this can be as
simple as:

  ksymoops < oops.txt

Remember to set the System.map to the correct one, if you did
not compile in /usr/src/linux.

Thanks,

Here it is... I opted to cut out the 1200-odd warnings, which from the
look of them were all because i'm running it under 2.4.0-ac4 (which

Thanks! My local mirror does not have -ac5 yet so I can't help
immediately. From the -ac5 log & the oops it looks as if Ingo's change
isn't quite complete yet...

o Uniprocessor APIC support/NMI wdog etc (Ingo Molnar)

Until then, what about disabling APIC support and trying again. This
will help confirm it... although it looks pretty definite.

I noticed (and was told by someone else) that it was APIC related. I
looked, and realized that IO-APIC got selected between my compiles of
ac4 and ac5. I recompiled ac5 w/o the IO-APIC stuff, and still got an
oops. So, i recompiled without ANY APIC stuff, and it booted fine, but
then had the same problems I was having w/ 2.4.1-pre1 related to X and
(maybe) the framebuffer. But that's a whole different story that I
think has been brought up in another thread.

Guess I'm back to -ac4 for now ;-)

Thanks,
Nathan

ksymoops defaults to using /proc entries from the current system. This
is fine for most people but you have to override the default when
decoding an oops from another kernel.

  ksymoops -KL -m /boot/System.map-2.4.0-ac5

ignores the running ksyms and lsmod files, removing your warnings.

This is why my original NMI for UP code in kdb uses wrmsr_eio() instead
of wrmsr. wrmsr_eio() catches errors where the APIC does not support
the msr and returns EIO instead of oopsing and taking the kernel with
it. I could never persuade Ingo to use wrmsr_eio() and check the
return code, maybe this will change his mind. Extract from kdb v1.7.

I have a patch from Ingo to fix this one properly. Its just getting tested

i prefer clear oopses and bug reports instead of ignoring them. A failed
MSR write is not something to be taken easily. MSR writes if fail mean
that there is a serious kernel bug - we want to stop the kernel and
complain ASAP. And correct code will be much more readable that way.

The bug here seems to be that we're using the same bit (X86_FEATURE_APIC) to
report two _different_ features.

We don't represent X86_FEATURE_CXMMX and X86_FEATURE_MMX with the same bit,
even though they are supposed to provide the same functionality - because
they are in fact different. Likewise we shouldn't use the same bit for the
two different types of APIC, IMO.

i think that the AMD APIC is truly 'compatible', but we are trying to
enable the APIC and program performance counters in an Intel-way. The MSRs
can be incompatible between steppings of the same CPU, so we should not
mark something 'incompatible' on that basis.

so the correct statement is: the UP-P6-specific way of enabling APICs does
not work on Athlons. It doesnt work on P5's either.

No, both workarounds are wrong, IMNSHO. The local APIC feature flag
isn't the problem, it's the kernel which at one point incorrectly
deduces "use Intel P6 MSRs" from "local APIC enabled".

The correct fix is to qualify the deduction using boot_cpu_data.
Patch below against -ac6.
