When I copy a file(13Megs) from /home/ to /tmp/, sync takes almost 2 minutes.
When I copy the same file to /usr/local/, sync returns almost right away. Both
filesystems are ext3 and are on the same harddrive. When sync is running,
the harddrive light stays on but I don't hear it doing anything. dmesg doesn't
show any errors either. Below is the `time` output for each command. If you
need anymore information let me know..

The CPU is a PIII866 with 512MB RAM.

Below is the `vmstat 1` output while sync is running after copying the

Gad. Please, mount those filesystems as ext2 and retest.

I just did, same exact behavior.. Anything else?

Possibly what is happening is that the /tmp partition lies on
a part of the disk which has a higher platter transfer speed
and this higher speed is causing retries or other problems
further down the chain.

You could have a fiddle with hdparm, try slowing down the
interface speed. Try a different set of cables, too.

Just tried with dma disabled, same problem. I'm gonna try another IDE
controller and see if it still happens.

I just tried with my Promise UDMA100 card with another cable and same
problem. Any other ideas? Should I try rc1-aa1?

Ugh. My first guess would be that you have one enormously fragmented
filesystem. 13MB in 2 minutes? A modern disk should get that amount
of data to disk in one second, but massive fragmentation can simply
kill disk performance.

If /home is on the same disk, do you get the same problem trying to
write there?

Yeah, /home/ is on the same disk. Your guess might be right because
that's what I was trying to show. When I copy the file, which is in
/home/(hda2) to /tmp/(hda1) and I sync, it takes almost 2 minutes. But
if I copy the same file, which is in /home/(hda2) to /usr/local/(hda3),
sync returns immediately. This disk isn't that old either.

hda: Maxtor 51536U3, ATA DISK drive
hda: 30015216 sectors (15368 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=1868/255/63,
UDMA(66)

Can be useful:
* strace -r sync
* ksymoopsed SysRq-T output (sync part only)

Get your data off that disk Immediately!

If you write a large file, ext2 will do a good job not fragmenting the
file. You should be able to get about 20M per second on a sequential
writes, about 10M per second, if your filesystem is badly fragmented.

So, the drive is taking abnormally long to read/write blocks. That is
an indication that it's "going to die soon".

That said, maybe there is a whole lot of (random) reads going on
on that disk? Are you swapping at the same time? Or maybe your
dayly "updatedb" is running?

I would test that Maxtor disk with their Powermax tool, i were you.
And asap.

I'not an expert, but yes, why not try another kernel version, like
rc1-aa1 or the 2.5 tree?

You should run badblocks to see if there's something wrong in the disk,
but if you can't see any output from the kernel when yo try to copy the
file, I think this won't be the problem...

Nope, I've even been running without swap.. And nope, no updatedb
running at the time either..

Another interesting thing would be to re-format the slow-partition, to
ext3 or another filesystem(if this can be done because you can backup
all the data)

Checking out $(smartctl -l /dev/hda) might be advisable too.

Whoa! That "dying" drive that I had on my desk today, had a similar
error count.

Speaking of "SMART": Does anybody know where to get the specs for
SMART?

The "product manuals" for the maxtor drives re-specify the ATA specs
by fully explaining every command, but when it comes to "SMART" it
just lists something like "READ SMART DATA: 512 bytes".
