Hi,
	Anybody know why I'm not getting 160MB transfers ?
	Kernel is Suse 2.4.19
	MB is Intel D845PESVL + 2.4 P4 + 512MB DDR333 ram.
	Adaptec card is in 3rd PCI slot.
	AGP ATI 7500 vga
	2 x U160 disks on channel B with special U160 cable and actively
	terminated.
	DVD + DAT on SE channel A. Nothing on U160 channel A.
	Snips under from log and /proc

39160 does 80MB/s/channel, the 160MB/s happens pretty much only as
the sum of both channels. I've had one for a couple of years, and it
performs very well, though it won't ever quite live up to the marketing
gimmick for bandwidth on a single channel. ISTR something about RAID
across channels involved, but I just use disks directly instead.

Nope, quoting from Adaptec's site:

The 3950 had dual 80MB/s channels.

Even out of good disks, you're unlikely to get more than 20MB/S out of 
each of them.  So, it would take at least 8 of those in a striped 
array to fill up a U160 channel.  Unlike IDE's claims of _burst_ 
speeds, SCSI can take all the bandwidth up, if you give it enough 
devices.

During negotiation, the drives will train down in speed if they don't 
think they can run at full speed which can be caused by cabling or 
termination issues.  You can also take their speed down manually in 
the card's BIOS, so check that too.

It looks to me from your dmesg that all of your devices are on the 
same channel.  Am I misreading things?

Hi,

the Adaptec 39160 is indeed capable of doing 160MB/s/channel. Did I
misread the whole thread ? Here's the dmesg output of my system.
I get >40MB/s per disk and >80MB/s per channel.

Maybe it's because of your DVD and DAT device. I only have disks
connected to the adapter.

64-bit vs. 32-bit PCI. Please follow up with the PCI info from dmesg
to let them know of where to get the (uncommon/expensive) right hardware.

Hi Bill,

I don't exactly know what PCI Info you want from dmesg.
My (uncommon ?) hardware includes the following:

ASUS P4T533-C (Intel 850 chipset)
Pentium IV 2.4 GHz
512MB PC1600 RDRAM

I thought it was 32-bit vs. 64-bit PCI, but apparently it's supposed
to be able to do 160MB/s on both.

They're both doing SCSI-2, so they'll have to be pulled.

... apparently it's -supposed- to be able to do 160MB/s even on 32-bit
PCI, NFI why mine isn't. It's still really smooth though. I never
missed the speed at all.

What you request:

What both agreed to do finally...:

So you hardware thiks it can not do U160. Possibilities:
- Check jumpers on the drive
- Active but SE termination, so no double data rate. Check your terminator
  is LVD.
- SE device at end of chain, so no LVD also (you say your DVD/DAT are on the
  other channel...)

I would vote for SE instead of LVD active terminator ar the cause. At least
'cause I also suffered from it (dam***d hardware dealers...)

	It might interest people to know the end story -
	After much fiddling around with cables/terminators, banning
	the SCSI-2 devices(DVD + DAT) to their own adapter and updating
	every piece of BIOS firmware in sight, I was still getting nowhere.
	So, (deep think) I threw a vanilla 2.4.19 onto the machine and
	LO and BEHOLD, I'm getting 160MB transfers!
	Well (hope Dave Jones is listening!,), it seems as though
	the Suse 8.1 kernel 2.4.19 has (yet another) problem.
