The AIC-7XXX version 6.2.1 driver hangs at startup under 2.4.x (we've
tried
2.4.2-2 (RH 7.1), 2.4.5, and 2.4.9).
The complete boot output is attached; the interesting parts are
as follows:

These same machines worked fine with 2.2.18 from www.kernel.org and
2.2.19 from RedHat. Any suggestions?

That's interesting as it appears to be the exact same problem I'm having
on my G4 PowerMac with a 2960 card and recent kernels. The 6.2.3 driver
didn't help (Justin, see the log I sent you).
Regards,
Ben.

You can try the updated BOOT disk Red Hat has made available for this, we
managed to workaround the bios bug for at least several motherboards.
But the 440GX chipset isn't really supported by linux; it contains some
Intel chips that nobody has the specification for and all 440GX bioses I've
seen have a buggy IRQ table as well, so that can't be used either. This
results in kernels not being able to get proper IRQ routing figured out. 2.2
gets it mostly right because it trusts a different bios table... which
breaks in other situations (don't put a cardbus controller in the machine,
2.2 will break).
Greetings,
Arjan van de Ven.

This again looks like an interrupt problem (driver not seeing interrupts).
To know for sure, I'd need to see the messages from an "aic7xxx=verbose"
boot.

I found a note about a bugzilla comment written by Doug Ledford at
RedHat at
http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/linux/linux-kernel/2001-18/0508.html
that suggests a work around is to build the kernel with IO-APIC support.
This appears to fix the current problem. So unless something else comes
up,
I am "fixed" at the moment.

I had something similar on my dev box (2.4.[789] / Dual PIII-750 / Via / 1.5G
/ Adaptec 2940 / three striped IBM DCHS-09Y 9.1G) and found that compiling
the aic7xxx driver with TCQ disabled got round the problem. A far from
perfect solution, I know, but it may get you up and running and maybe
provide some more clues as to what is happening.
