i've released the 2.6.19-rc6-rt5 tree, which can be downloaded from the
usual place:
http://redhat.com/~mingo/realtime-preempt/
the -rt YUM repository for Fedora Core 6 can be activated via:
cd /etc/yum.repos.d
wget http://people.redhat.com/~mingo/realtime-preempt/rt.repo
yum install kernel-rt
on x86_64, do:
yum install kernel-rt.x86_64
lots of fixes and improvements were done to -rt5. In particular
SMP/dual-core systems should get quite a bit faster. Changes:
- implemented proper per-cpu page allocation (PCP-list) in
page_alloc.c, for PREEMPT_RT too. (previously this code was #ifdef-ed
out and we allocated straight from the zones - but this caused the
zone lock to act as a global lock)
- speedup of PREEMPT_RT's implementation of atomic_dec_and_lock().
(this was a major bottleneck for workloads like kernel compiles.)
- more tracer features: symbolic stack backtraces embedded in
/proc/latency_trace for certain types of events, switchable syscall
tracing.
- irq-threading cleanups, based on the comments from Sergei Shtylyov,
Daniel Walker and Benjamin Herrenschmidt.
- vsyscall & tracing fixes: 'notsc' should not be required on the YUM
rpms anymore.
to build a 2.6.19-rc6-rt5 tree, the following patches should be applied:
http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.18.tar.bz2
http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/patch-2.6.19-rc6.bz2
http://redhat.com/~mingo/realtime-preempt/patch-2.6.19-rc6-rt5
as usual, bugreports, fixes and suggestions are welcome,
Ingo

Is there a git tree for -rt?

Well I still need it else no boot.
Sorry for insist, but so difficult after build kernel, copy kernel-devel
too, into yum directory ?
Thanks,

nope - and it's not really something that fits the git model that well.
(it's frequently rebased)

if you use XFS you should turn off CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING.

i'm using it every day on both x86_64 and i386. I'll try your config.

hmm ... still no log capture of that boot failure?

sure, i've uploaded it for the latest kernel, and it will probably be
part of the repository in the future too. Could you check that it works
for you?

Ingo posted a fix in another thread.
The (whitespace damaged, handapply!) excerpt of that fix below made
i386 compile here.

I have problems runinng cyclictest on the more recent -rt kernels. A
similar problem I reported recently on a Pentium M / ICH6 Dell box is
solved by using the acpi_pm timer.
The problematic box is a 700 MHz Celeron (Coppermine) which doesn't have
ACPI.
The last kernel that run with sane cyclictest results was 2.6.18-rt6:
- root@krachkiste:~/cyclictest-v0.11 ./cyclictest -n -t 4 -p 90 -l 10000
0.13 0.10 0.13 1/52 2721

T: 3 ( 2721) P:87 I: 2500 C: 4001 Min: 14 Act: 28 Avg: 38 Max: 114
The following numbers have been taken on 2.6.19-rc6-rt5, the effect is there
since 2.6.18-rt7.
- "cyclictest -n -p 90 -t 4" is just "running upwards".
root@krachkiste:~/cyclictest-v0.11 ./cyclictest -n -p 90 -t 4 -l 1000

- Using a relative timer (-r), I get huge latencies:
root@krachkiste:~/cyclictest-v0.11 ./cyclictest -n -p 90 -t 4 -r -l 1000
0.00 0.00 0.00 1/56 2838

T: 3 ( 2838) P:87 I: 2500 C: 999 Min: 778 Act: 5409 Avg: 5462 Max: 7713
This is with "lapic lapictimer" on the kernel commandline.
The system has chosen "pit" as it's clocksource, switching to tsc or jiffies
doesn't change anything.
With 2.6.18-rt6 I've seen these lines in the dmesg output:
Nov 22 12:05:24 krachkiste kernel: Time: tsc clocksource has been installed.
Nov 22 12:05:24 krachkiste kernel: Event source pit disabled
Nov 22 12:05:24 krachkiste kernel: Event source lapic configured with caps set: 08
Nov 22 12:05:24 krachkiste kernel: hrtimers: Switched to high resolution mode CPU 0
Especially the "Switched to high resolution mode" isn't there with the later
kernels (high resolution timers is on in the config, dyntick is off).

Ingo,
I started building the new kernels a few days ago with your
2.6.19-rc6-rt0 announcement. The kernels have built fine but so far I
am unable to build the realtime-lsm package against them so no reason
to reboot.
I know there were some comments awhile back about being required to
switch to PAM. Has that occurred?
If not then there is a regression issue for realtime-lsm.
Thanks,
Mark

Hello Robert and Ingo,
I'm beginning to play with -rt patches. I started by using the
2.6.19-rc6-rt5, after reading the rt-wiki
(http://rt.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/RT_PREEMPT_HOWTO). I applied the
last two compile corrections patches. However, I got a similar problem
as reported by Robert:
2.6.19-rc6:
T: 0 ( 4861) P:80 I: 10000 C: 10000 Min: 2592 Act: 4878 Avg:

2.6.19-rc6-rt5:
T: 0 ( 3661) P:80 I: 10000 C: 10000 Min: 828 Act: 1698 Avg:
3291 Max: 7171
These results are quite different from what is reported at the wiki.
I'm also attaching my .config and here is a description of my cpu:

Is this with -r or without? I didn't get fixed maxima at all on the
celeron box. It also looks like you've changed the interval time to
10ms; nevertheless: a delay of > 10 ms @ a cylce time of 10 ms means
missing the deadlines.
Do you have the possibility to switch off the SMI for your chipset? As
tglx noted on irc recently this may be dangerous because thermal
throtteling can be implemented via SMI, but to get an idea if the SMI is
the reason for the delays, switching it off for a short time should do
the job.

Something is really wrong with page alloc on this one. Compiled 2.6.19-rc6-rt5
with the one patch to page_alloc.c as posted on the list here.
Kernel uses around 50% mem and 30% swap without doing anything.
I get a lot of these:

this fixes issues like rmmod hanging and inodes leaking.

As Realtime LSM is an out of tree module and there's no stable kernel
module API it's impossible to prevent regressions.
That being said, the realtime LSM patch is so simple that it should work
- how exactly does it fail?

Hi Lee,
The failure is a Gentoo sandbax failure. On the surface of it I
didn't really think it was a kernel problem but I know you've pushed
me to move to PAM telling me realtime-lsm wasn't going to work in the
future. I really just wanted to know that PAM was now a requirement
instead of only best practice.
Thanks,
Mark

i can include it in -rt if it's simple enough - if someone's interested
then please send me a patch.

I said it was not guaranteed to work. It should work as long as someone
maintains it.
I don't think anyone expected it to take so long for distros to update
their PAM packages so as to make patching the kernel unnecessary.

Forwarding it off list.
Thanks Ingo. I'm very interested if it works for you to do this.
Cheers,
Mark

i've integrated it into -rt (see the patch below), but i marked it
obsolete and i might not be able to carry it for long - we'll see. The
preferred solution is to use newer PAM and its rt-limits features. But
to ease migration i'll keep the realtime-lsm for a while.
