I see an image on both pictures, so to me it looks like the backlight
is on in both cases otherwise the image would not be visible at all.

I guess what you mean is that the backlight is less bright in one
image vs the other image ?

Have you tried changing the brightness with the brightness slider
in the top right gnome shell system menu (which is open in one
your 2 screenshots) ?

What is the output of:

ls -l /sys/class/backlight/

With the working 7.0.2 kernel ?

And what is the output of the same command with the non working
7.1-rc1 kernel ?
