apart from (arguably scarce) documentation in lnet/doc, one can start
with Sandia portals documentation, which still matches overall LNET
design (the interfaces, of course, diverged):

We've recently documented the LNet API in the form of Doxygen
comments, where you might find some differences from the Sandia
Portals API:
