Can anyone recommend some programs for Linux on Ultra for ripping CDs and
encoding MP3's?

strictly for my own personal use, of course.

(I assume this is one application where an Ultra would do much better than an
x86, even one with much higher MHz rating).

Go to www.freshmeat.net, put "ripper" into the "find" test field,
you'll get a list of about 10 or 11 to choose from.

I use encoder-js found at wopr.campus.se /pub/mpeg_layer_3 and cdrecord.

OOPS... I gave you the address of an encoder and cd recorder. For ripping
I use cdparanoia... found at www.xiph.org/paranoia/

You'd think so, but any modern CPU does just fine at mp3 encoding,
better than realtime usually. The bottleneck is usually the CD
drive, and my personal experience has been the consumer-grade
ATAPI CD drives are the only ones with greater than 1x audio read
speeds. I haven't tried ripping audio tracks on any of my sun
	boxes though, YMMV.

I definitely agree on the encoding part, even crappy first-batch
Celerons do it without a problem. But the ability to rip, encode, and
play mp3s at the same time is great. I haven't found a PC that can do
that -- the ripping process always eats up the I/O of the machine too
much. Ripping at a different speed, while it uses less I/O, still uses
too much to justify the speed loss.

This is easy! I have a PII 400 with 1 2GB SCSI2 HD and a 4x SCSI
toshiba CDROM and I encode, rip, and play mp3s all the time. In fact I
have even compiled code during this process! Note: Esd had to be
reniced to -10

In my book, having all SCSI components takes your machine out of
the "PC" classification. When I think "PC", an IDE disk, IDE CDROM, and
Celeron come to mind. And you had to renice esd. ;)

So an Ultra 10 with IDE devices is a PC, right?

The cache the cpu has in this case declassifies it from an
otherwise deathly PC label.

My opinion of Ultra5/10s is not very high. ;)

I bet!
The only Sun class thing about U5/10s is the price ;-)
I think the U10 is the only 'tower' machine that has to be opened
upside-down...

And the little metal flaps below (or above, if you've got the case
off) the floppy have to be bent to add another drive. It's very
frustrating, and I cut my hands on those more than any other case I've
ever messed with.

Do you have a SCSI drive that will read audio tracks at above 1x?

Using the same model Toshiba CDROM(5401 I think) on Solaris I know for a
fact that it can rip @ 3x using this program:

Erm... I've got a plextor that'll do that, a couple of toshibas that'll do
that (mostly shipped by sun), an HP that'll do that...

The mechanism for reading CDs in an ATAPI drive and a SCSI drive are
fundamentally the same thing. In fact, most everything else is too --
ATAPI is sending SCSI commands over an IDE bus.

And in fact 2.3 uses the exact same code to do ripping from
SCSI and ATAPI drives.
