This looks fine to me.  This is *why* the device gives us the length
which was written; we can trust that, even if we can't trust the
writer of data.

(In theory: noone has implemented such a system, yet).

The free-outside-interrupt issue is usually dealt with by offloading to
a wq, but your variant works (and isn't too ugly).

Looks like this should be an easy noop even if !is_rproc_serial.

This seems wrong; either this is needed even if !is_rproc_serial(), or
it's not necessary as the out_vq is empty.

Every path I can see has the device reset (in which case the queues
should not be active), or we got a VIRTIO_CONSOLE_PORT_REMOVE event (in
which case, the same).

I think we can have non-blocking writes which could leave buffers in
out_vq: Amit?

Cheers Rusty. Andrew's right about this affecting highmem on x86 too (I
guess that's what Sasha saw with the 9p memory issues), so stable makes
sense.

One wonders whether we can still use the slab caches
and improve the locality by aligning the size.
Something like the below - this passed basic testing but
didn't measure performance yet.

    virtio: align size for indirect buffers
    
    Improve locality for indirect buffer allocations
    and avoid false cache sharing by aligning
    allocations to cache line size.

We copy head count to a 16 bit field, this works by chance on LE but on
BE guest gets 0. Fix it up.

So this is because with !USB_SUPPORT but EARLY_PRINTK_DBGP
dbgp_reset_prep() and dbgp_external_startup() get pointlessly
defined and exported. This got broken by the merge
recommendation for the ARM side changes (originally compilation
of drivers/xen/dbgp.c depended on just CONFIG_XEN_DOM0).

From my pov, fixing the USB side would be the clean solution (i.e.
putting those function definitions inside a CONFIG_USB_SUPPORT
conditional).

The alternative of a smaller change would be to extend the
conditional around the respective xen_dbgp_...() declarations
in include/linux/usb/ehci_def.h to become

#if defined(CONFIG_XEN_DOM0) && defined(CONFIG_USB_SUPPORT)

Please advise towards your preference.

I think that your first suggestion is the right one.


Otherwise we could also make drivers/xen/dbgp.c compile if
CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK_DBGP rather than CONFIG_USB_SUPPORT.
I think that it would create fewer maintenance pains if dbgp_reset_prep
and dbgp_external_startup had the same compile requirements as their xen
counterparts (aside from Xen support of course).

EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL() for this, and all other exports?

And it seems that you have a bunch of "unused" parameters for this, and
other public functions.  Please just remove them entirely, otherwise it
just confuses reviewers, and anyone who wants to write code to interface
with the code.  You can always add parameters at a later point in time
if you find that you really need them.

We'd prefer to leave them as vanilla exports.  While we're committed
to open-sourcing everything, including our non-upstreamed drivers,
we don't really have a strong opinion regarding consuming our exports
in closed-source (general GPL issues aside).

Also, regarding that particular public function, it seems to have slipped
through the cracks.  It's an artifact of the API being cross-platform
prior to upstreaming.  On Linux, it makes no sense whatsoever, so we'll
just yank it completely.

You can't just say "general GPL issues aside".  Honestly, given your
company's prior actions in regards to Linux kernel drivers and the
licenses of them, I don't trust them at all.  To help gain that trust
back, marking the exports in this manner will be a great improvement.

To insist otherwise is to only reinforce my doubts, and reduce my
wanting to even review or accept this code at all.  Sorry about that.

What other calls can be removed?  Did you run sparse on all of these
files to ensure that things are "clean" with regards to static functions
and the like?

Huh? What are the concerns exactly? I do not really see difference between
EXPORT_SYMBOL() and EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL(). The code either derivative of the
kernel or it is not and so it either falls under the kernel license or not.

From out perspective we do not really care what other code might use VMCI,
all our Linux drivers, even if not all are upstream [yet], are GPL.

For many many years, you shipped closed source Linux kernel drivers for
your products.  Only recently has this changed.

I totally agree.  In this case, do you think it falls under the kernel
license or not?

That's perfectly fair.  In the interest of gaining back some of that
trust, we'll be more than happy to make the exports GPL.  Expect a diff
in the next few days with that change along with any modifications
necessary after a sparse sanity check.

VMCI implementation that we are submitting is GPL as witnessed by the license
notices on the source files ;)

The source to Open VM Tools (which includes guest drivers that have not
been upstreamed yet) can be always found here:

That was in the past. As far as I know our Linux drivers have been open
for more than 5 years, so not that recently.
