I am considering getting a copy of the new Debian 3.0 release,  but I
understand that they
use  "deb" rather than "rpm"  for package installation.

Please can anyone  on the list who has made the transition from rpm to deb
tell me
how they got on ?    Is the deb system as easy and as convenient as rpm ?

I can't really answer your question, since I never used .rpm (I moved to 
Debian from Slackware). Having used Debian for several years now, I can 
tell you that the .deb-based system is quite convenient to use, once you 
get over a modest learning curve. That is, package management with apt-get 
and aptcache is quite convenient; dpkg is a bit clunkier, but you should 
find that you do not need to use it often.

Your biggest problem in moving to Debian is likely not to be the package 
manager but the (small) number of free (in some sense) packages not 
available in .deb form. Although there are not many of these packages, if 
you need any of them, you'll have to install them yourself (either from 
.tgz files or from the unofficial .deb packages some sites offer).

It also looks to me like distributors of commercial software are still more 
likely to offer .rpm packages of their applications than .deb packages. 
This doesn't affect me but may be a consideration for you.

I found rpm to be easy and convenient for about one month...
After two years with it I can't bare with it any more. This is the 
main reason for my own switch to Debian. I find slackwares tgz format
to be much more convenient and easy to use than rpm.
 
I'm not qualified to answer this question yet, but I think that 
you will find more persons that are if you go to www.debian.org, 
and subscribe to the mailing list: debian-user.
A warning is in place here: The Debian User Mailing list has a huge
throughput ( 300 articles a day per mimimum or so )

This question does however come up very often there, so I think you
will probably find more, and better answers by looking through the 
mailing list archives at www.debian.org

I think though that the most difficult problem with switching from
RPM based to Debian is finding a good Debian CD retailer nearby.

Is it possible to configure more than one package manager in yocto ?
Does it mean it will create install package for both ?

Hi,
Thanks a lot for the reference.

It is said: "The build system uses only the first argument in the list
as the package manager when creating your image or SDK. However,
packages will be created using any additional packaging classes you
specify"

I understand from this that in target it will be possible to install a
package, using the other package manager.

Why would you want to do this?

You'll need to install the package management tooling, and the database of
the one you install after the rootfs creation won't know about anything
that is already in the rootfs.

It's a lot easier to just pick a package manager and use it consistently.
