Hi,

with help of VIA tech, i've changed via8233 drivers to support VT8233A
chip, which has been not working so far.
the changes were already commited to cvs.

so, if someone has VIA8233 chipsets, please test the latest cvs
version, and report back to this ML. (please check via8233.c has
rev.1.16.)

this change affects not only to VT8233A but also VT8233 and VT8233C
chips. it'd be appreciated if owners of these chips can test the
driver.

also, if your hardware supports multiple channels (4/6 playbacks) or
spdif i/o, please let me know. these features are not implemented,
but could be done relatively easily.

thanks,

Takashi

Hi there,

I just tried from CVS (within the last 20 mins) on my MSI KT266A chipset
with VT8233 southbridge and have a few problems. I've compiled and
modprobe'd all the req'd modules. The VT8233 detected properly, I've setup
OSS emulation and /dev/dsp exists. I try playing an mp3 stream thru xmms
and everything looks okay (no errors), but when I run any of the alsa apps
(alsactl store, alsamixer) I get a "function snd_ctl_open failed for
default: Sound protocol is not compatible" error .. I'm definitely using
the right lib and utils from the cvs ..

later,
Steve

Hi,

I was tested the last cvs version of via8233 driver (rev.1.18)
on a Soltek MB SL-75DRV4 (VIA266 chipset with VT8233A sb).
And it's not work. There is no sound via pcm.

Hi,

I've exectly the same problem. When I use "cat /usr/kde/3/hare/sounds/pop.wav
> /dev/dsp", I get a I/O write error. The only thing that works is playing a
CD, I can mute/unmute, set the volume via alsamixer etc.
Bye,

Niek.

Hi,

I can't get the driver (cvs-version 1.18) running on a VT8233A (EPoX 8K3A+).
I get the following error when trying to play a sound file with aplay:

ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:413:(snd_pcm_hw_drain) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_DRAIN failed:
Input/Output error

dmesg-output:

ALSA ../alsa-kernel/core/pcm_lib.c:1871: playback write error (DMA or IRQ
trouble?)
...
ALSA ../alsa-kernel/core/pcm_native.c:1093: playback drain error (DMA or IRQ
trouble?)

Any suggestions?
René

it seems like no interrupts are generated during playback.
could you check whether the status in /proc/interrupts is changed
during playback?

also, could you check whether capture works? capture uses a different
SGD, so it might work individually from playback.

(BTW, CD and line-ine can be heard without problems, since they are
routed directly throught ac97, so no sound engine is needed.)

thanks,

Takashi

Hi,

I tried to to record from mic and line in. I have no problems with
recording, but the file is empty.

Some very strange things happend on my machine. I tried to use the oss
module and it worked without problems. Then I uninstalled the evaluation
version and removed the modules from memory and reloaded your modules. Now I
can playback sounds without getting an error, but the sound is too fast,
exactly 2x faster than it should be. Is it possible, that it is only an
initialization problem of the sound chip?

René

How can I test the capture? Do you mean that I have to plug in a microphone
and record a sound or so?

Thanks,

Niek.

Sorry,

forgot to mention, that I cannot check the status of the interrupt, because
there are other devices on the same interrupt (NIC and SCSI-adapter). I
could not find an option in my bios to give the audio chip an own interrupt.

Really great work!

Takashi, thanks a lot for writing this driver!

Greetings,

I tried to measure the interrupts. Here are the results:

If I don't play sounds, I have about 1 interrupt/sec on interrupt 11.
If I play a mp3 with mpg321 (44,1kHz, 16bit), I get about 1375
interrupts/sec.
All values are measured after initializing the chip with oss-module,
removing it from memory and reloading alsa-module. If I don't load the
oss-module before and remove it, there are no interrupts used.

ok, then at least interrupts for capture work well.

interesting.
that imples, yes, that the initialization of playback channel is
incorrect.

Congratulations!!!

It's running, I have many unresolved symbols, but that does not matter, the
card runs without trouble, quality is better than from commerical
oss-module. I don't hear a difference to my SB 128 PCI with es1370. Now I
will try to use the recording function.

Thank you very much!
René
