Could you please send me:

 * the output of the
     lspci -nvv
   command

 * the make and model number of your laptop

 * a list of the audio inputs/outputs provided on your laptop (jacks,
   internal speakers, internal microphones etc)

I also need a few more details about what you achieved with the "model=test"
tests.  Was the mic jack the only place you were able to get sound out of?
Did you unmute every control under alsamixer and turn every volume control
to maximum?  Did you try to change the GPIO controls to see if that made any
difference to any of the jacks and/or the internal speaker?

Internal speaker, headphone jack and microphone jack.

Yes - nothing from the headphone jack or speakers.

It would seem that both the headphone jack and the internal speaker are

laptop we've encountered with a similar issue - even though everything's
up these two outputs refuse to produce any sound.

I'll be pondering this issue over the next few days to see if there's
something obvious that I've missed - perhaps there's an obscure object in
the ALC260 that the test model doesn't unmute which is needed by these HP
laptops.  Maybe others on the list have ideas as well.

Final thought for the day: could you use alsamixer to change all the
pin modes to "Line-in" and then back to "Line-out" or "headphones".  Then
try the tests again and see if you get audio from any additional jacks or
the internal speaker.

:-( I suppose it's unlikely that writing to Realtek and/or HP would be
fruitful.

No change unfortunately. Audio comes only from the mic jack both with
everything set to Line-out or to Headphone. (The only difference is some
additional static when MIC1 pin mode is set to headphone.)

This is all true.  However, the outcomes posted by David and Andrea suggest
that in their particular laptops there is something *outside* the ALC260
chip itself which is preventing the speaker and headphone jack from passing
audio.  The alc260 test model provides access to almost all the control
ports offered by the ALC260.  If one doesn't get audio when using the test
mode with all pins configured as outputs, everything unmuted and all volumes
set to maximum, there's not much left at the chip level to try.

For example there are some Acer laptops which appear to implement their own
amplifier for the internal speaker which is only powered up when one of the
ALC260's GPIO lines is raised.  However, there's nothing stopping the
manufacturers from using some other enabling mechanism and if this is done
it's outside the scope of the Realtek chip; thus in this case Realtek might
not have the information themselves to provide assistance.

Having said all that I'm still hoping that there's something obvious I've
missed in the test mode configuration.

Compaq Presario B1900 laptop to work. I followed Jonathan Woithe's
recent advice to Andrew Neporada - I compiled the 1.0.13 drivers with
the debug option and used model=test. With all "pin mode" controls set
to headphone I'm getting sound through the microphone jack.

Is anyone able to help me get this card to work? Let me know if I need
to provide any more information. I'm pleased to have got some sound
through the test driver, but I don't know where to go from here.
