Hi,
I'm experimenting some problems with the hda-intel module because my
soundcard isn't recognized by the module (in fact, the module find that
it's a hda-intel but it doesn't know the codec to use and try guessing
by the bios). I've tried to use other codecs but it just ignore it ie:
modprobe snd-hda-intel model=6stck-dig
give me :
hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC882, trying auto-probe from BIOS...

The card is an integrated on an Asus P5WD.
There are 6 jack on the card plus 1 spdif coax, 1 spdif optical and 1
connexion on the motherboard for mic and line out for the case front
(can be used in hda mode or legacy AC97 mode). There is also something
special, a connector for using the speakers the the computer is off.

Right now, the card works, but there are some quirks:
- there is no master control and some apps aren't happy at all about it,
- the digital out is not in a common place (I don't know how to say it
better. In the apps, it used to be used like this :
  AES0=0x6,AES1=0x82,AES2=0x0,AES3=0x2
but here, I have to use:
  AES0=0x6,AES1=0x82,AES2=0x0,AES3=0x1
(it hard to find the meaning of this, I didn't found it in the docs,
it was a trial-error guessing, with the help of /proc/asound/devices)
- sometimes, (in fact, never with the 1.0.13 of the drivers but very
often with the 1.0.14) the digital out seems to be frozen when
sending ac3 by pass trough. I mean,ie I use it for stereo sound, OK,
I try to watch a DVD, no sound goes out and my speaker system tries
to detect the kind of thing I'm sending to them, I quit the DVD app,
I try to listen to music and, there is no more sound on this channel
(the speakers always try to detect the kind of data, I have tried to
shut them off and on, but it's always the same). Maybe it's another,
problem and, when the 1.0.14 will be released, I'll report it if it
   persist.

The more annoying thing is the lack of master control.

Do you think I can provide you enough informations to correct it or
you need some specs from Asus ?

Nicolas.

PS: I'm not a c programmer (nor c++) so I just can help you giving
informations or trying some procedures for you (I regret that, trust me)
If you need more informations, just ask me.

Sorry for the size of this mail.

Did you try "model=6stack-dig"? (I noticed a typo in your modprobe
line).

If that doesn't work (check dmesg output), then you can add a single
line in alsa-driver-1.0.14rc1/alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c to add
your system. Look for "alc882_cfg_tbl", and add:

SND_PCI_QUIRK(0x1043, 0x81d8, "Asus P5WD", ALC882_6ST_DIG),

Give that a try and see if it helps.

I tried model=6stck-dig, I'm sorry (it's a typo in the hda_codec.txt
which comes with the kernel)
with 6stack-dig, the module accept the option but I get (it seems) the
same controls as bios-tried, so not any master control (maybe there is
no such control on this board, I don't know, but I think it should be)
I've tried 6stack-dig, 3stack-dig, and arima but it's 6stack-dig (or
bios) that fit the best.
Should I try with model that aren't ALC882 ? (I've tried one, but it's
not accepted, I don't know if I should try all of them)

It was not needed (because of the typo) but maybe I should post it
somewhere in the bug tracking to add the id to the this file ? (I was
surprised there wasn't any mail or bug about this MB)

Not really (the model doesn't fit), but many thanks for your so fast answer.

I've fixed it and will get it upstream in another email, thanks.

I'll add that to the code for now.

No, because it wouldn't work. When snd-hda-intel loads, it looks at the
codecs on the bus (there can be 16), and determines the vendor and
model. It then looks at the tables to see if that vendor/model is
listed (each of the patch_*.c files has their own table at the end of
the file). If a correct entry is found, the table tells the driver
which patch to use, and each patch has different configuration
definitions.
The patch looks at it's own table to match your pci subsystem ID so that
it can load the correct settings for your motherboard. If your
subsystem ID isn't listed, then the driver will revert to "auto" mode.

Hope that explanation helps.

As to a Master Volume, I can look into adding it if you'd be willing to
give it a test run. I'll need one piece of output from your system,
though. Type "cat /proc/asound/version /proc/asound/card0/codec*
>Asus-p5W-codec.out" and send it to me.

I won't be able to get to it until next week at the earliest, but maybe
we can get it working.

Hello.
I am looking for some time at this mailing list and found exactly the
problem I have with my motherboard ASUS N4L-VM DM ( C2D Merom + ALC882
). Originally it was reported by Nicolas Di Pietro [potens@swing.be] for
Asus P5WD motherboard. As it is taken care by Tobin Davis I am asking to
add this motherboard to the list and am going to report results.
Regards,
Oleg Aleksandrov

Same config for Asus N4L-VM DH.

The simptoms are the same:
-no master control,
-digital out randomly locks ( most of the time is locked ),
-similar behavior is observered for ALSA 1.0.13 and 1.0.14rc1.
