Hi,

ath9k is meant only for 802.11n chipsets. What you are using is  
802.11abg and as such will use ath5k drivers.

yes from what i can tell it's actually the most powerful atheros card at the
moment with 3 x 3 MIMO.

is there a bug tracker or something more appropriate to submit my problem or
is this the correct place?

also how does one normally go about adding their hardware so it gets picked
up by a driver? do the developers need more information?

This is incorrect, 3 chains do not imply 3 streams. I've tried to

For the device you mentioned (AR5416) its 2.

AR5416 and AR9280 are 2 stream.

AR9285 is 1 stream.

All AR9280s are 2 stream and have a 2x2 RX/TX chain configuration.

The AR5416 has an 3x2 RX/TX chain configuration but it must be noted
this then means one stream can use two chains with selection diversity
-- sort of like antenna diversity but for one chain.

AR9285 devices are 1-stream and use antenna diversity with some
enhancements, I think one of the enhancements is LNA, which I believe
means we get to dynamically configure the power amplifier depending on
the noise on the driver and I think this helps with noisy
environments.

AR9170 is 2 stream 2x2 chain config.

AR9271 (USB) is 1 stream with antenna diversity support (and LNA IIRC).

range / has the greatest transmission rate all else being equal.
my atheros 5008 is the following combination: AR5416/AR5133

according to that website it is 3x3 MIMO with 3 radio's 3 antenna's


although i do find this interesting we're a fair bit away from my problem of
ath9k not even recognising my chip at all regardless of it's awesome :(

If you test it and i you say it works then perhaps, the device ID
seems strange, you sure its not a busted EEPROM? Anyway, test it and
provide the output.

I will do my best to get it working, otherwise i will just get another one i
suppose.
i got the thing from ebay to replace a chip that didn't play nice with linux
and my university wifi, i have
no idea why it has a strange device ID.

ok i got back to my laptop, and i did the following (i hope correctly)

i applied the patch file using the 'patch -p1 < ff1c.patch' (after putting
the patch file in the root directory of compat wireless)  then make and make
install.

i rebooted the system, and now i do get some atheros related information in
dmesg which leads me to believe i correctly patched and installed the new
drivers (first timer)

but it seems to have ended in another problem here is what dmesg has to say:

[   10.239414] ath9k 0000:05:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ
18
[   10.239428] ath9k 0000:05:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
[   10.239543] ath9k 0000:05:00.0: failed to initialize device
[   10.239556] ath9k 0000:05:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
[   10.239564] ath9k: probe of 0000:05:00.0 failed with error -95

what is the verdict? is this a dud card? (at the moment i'm thinking yes.)

If using compat-wireless no, you just need to edit config.mk and make
sure to uncomment CONFIG_ATH9K_DEBUG as follows:

CONFIG_ATH9K_DEBUG=y

Then make clean, and make.

Don't forget you also have ./scripts/driver-select so you can select only
ath9k if you want to only compile and install that.

i recompiled the ath9k driver with debug support, but i'm a little confused
as to how i read the debug output, i mounted debugfs as per the linked wiki,
and indeed the folder /sys/kernel/debug/ath9k exists (i don't think it did
previously) but there's nothing in there, what am i doing wrong?

sudo rmmod ath9k
sudo dmesg -c > /dev/null
sudo modprobe ath9k debug=0xfffffff

sudo dmesg -c > log

Paste the log.
