Hi,
Please CC me since I'm not subscribed to the list.
I've been trying to figure out why two Dell Precision 530 Workstations
(dual 1.7 GHZ Intel Xeon) we just purchased running Linux (I installed
Debian with 2.4.7 and 2.4.8 kernels) are much slower than expected.
Note that they were just as slow with the vanilla RedHat 7.1
installation they were shipped with. Our dual 1 GHz PIII is just as
fast as they are. I'm not sure if it's a hardware or kernel
problem. My apologies if this stuff has nothing to do with the
kernel.
Both the Xeon (P4-based) systems and PIII (non-Xeon) have comparable
hardware. No SCSI, all IDE. 400 MHz RDRAM, etc. However, the PIII
box only has 512MB RAM compared to the 1 GB of RAM the Xeon boxes
have.

Any ideas why CPU1 isn't getting any interrupts? Incidentally,
interrupts appear to be fairly well balanced on our PIII box.

Is this a problem with kernel, the hardware, or some boneheaded thing
that I may be doing in my kernel configuration? Dell tech support was
clueless about this issue. In fact, they didn't seem to care too much
about the benchmarks!

If you look at the figures from the various benchmarking sites that doesnt
sound unexpected. If you can recode your applications (eg if its a complex
analysis problem) to use SSE2 and the like you may well get big speed ups

I noticed those web sites, too, which is why I'm confused as to why
I'm achieving such dismal performance.
I don't think we can take advantage of the SSE2 instruction since
we're mostly using these boxes as fast build/compile boxes.
One of the benchmark sites that I browsed through showed a 30 second
difference in kernel 2.4.2 compile times between a 1 GHz PIII a 1.7GHz
Xeon. I realize that such differences are application dependent, but
we only noticed a 10 second difference in our application (ACE/TAO).
Sometimes the PIII box was faster with the compiles, too.
I wasn't expecting a 70% increase in speed but I did expect a
noticeable performance boost rather than a equal or lesser
performance. Was I expecting too much?

To be honest, I'm not sure what I should be looking for (sorry... I'm
not a kernel hacker yet). Should I just send the boot messages (about
a 15K file)?

It certainly seems so. The PIV seems to be very touchy about code
patterns and the kind of jobs its fed. Gcc at the moment doesn't have PIV
optimisations either. The Athlon by contrast is extremely good at handling
code compiled for any CPU variant and that meant Athlon didnt need much
if any work for performance

Thats fine - your chipset is newer than the AGP code knows.
