Had similar trouble with the Nvidia driver: despite a good - and,
according to the Nvidia cocumentation, complete and compatible -
installation of Mdk 8.2 the Nvidia driver refuses to install.

It complains about the kernel versin - the Nvidia driver wants
"kernel = 2.4.8-16mdk" while for its "Mdk 8.1"-compliant installation:
while Mdk 8.1 and 8.2 have higher kernel versions (2.4.18-6mdk for the
latter).

Clearly a (Nividia) bug.

I don't think so.... I use Mandrake 8.2 and I can install it on my system. 
But, may be rather buggy, sometimes I got hang when playing tuxracer or just 
run a opengl application.  I don't know why this happen, may be the drivers 
is not stable yet.

a trouble with OpenGL

hello.

	I am using Mandrake 8.2 with KDE 3.02. Every time I run a qt program (even it 
is a helloworld) from my console, it always display "Loading Required 
libGL.so.1.3.401" on console. The program run as usually.
I have been checked my /usr/X11R6/lib/ and I can found a libGL.so.1.3.401. 
I have been try to make a link (ln -s libGL.so.1.3.401 libGL.so), and it still 
doesn't work.

I have another problem, I tried to install NVIDIA graphic driver for Linux 
(driver for : RivaTNT2). The drivers (rpm)  that I installed are :
1. NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-3123.i386.rpm (GLX)
2. NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.mdk82up.i586.rpm ( kernel driver)
After I restart my X Server, now I completly cannot run any openGL application 
on Linux. It always said : "  OpenGL not supported " 

I checked on /usr/X11R6/lib again, and I found that 
all libGL* was renamed become 
xxx.libGL.so.1.2.RPMSAVE*
xxx.libGL.so.1.3.401.RPMSAVE*
xxx.libGL.so.x.RPMSAVE*
xxx.libGL.so.1.0.RPMSAVE*

What should I do to make my system work well again (especially OpenGL)?

It is difficult to say for certain, but probably not. On my system (Debian 
Sid), the equivalent libraries are located in /usr/X11R6/lib/, but /usr/lib 
contains symlinks to them. This arrangement implies that some applications 
expect to find them in one place, others in the other. So your safer course 
is to put symlinks in /usr/X11R6/lib that point to the actual libraries 
("man ln" if you need to learn how to do this).

I have already make a ln (ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/liGLU.so libGLU.so) in 
/usr/lib.

when I try to compile / make a program, it compiled successfully. But, when I 
try to run the program it always error :

Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Failed to Create Window : Couldn't find matching GLX visual

Must I re-install Mesa3D & uninstall NVIDIA driver that I have just installed 
?

I belive you need to read the documentation witch came with the NVIDIA 
driver, further more if you read and interpret the error message above it 
says, Xlibaray can't find the "GLX" extention module in your display 
enviroment.

In other words edit your XF86Config file as per the NVIDIA doc's.
Under the "modules" section" you need;
# This loads the GLX module
    Load       "glx"

your probably running X using the old "nv" opensource driver, so the 
NVidia driver - although installed - is not being used. while in X open 
an xterm and type "lsmod" and see if "Used By" is greater than 0 for the 
NVidia module.

In your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file make sure in the device section that 
Driver is "nvidia".

Oh what fun,
	in addition to the information above please note that kernels compiled
with a GCC3.*.* and modules compiled with GCC2 (ie the nvidia driver)
don't always co-exist happily (at least according to hedrat). On my
machine just adding the /etc/modules.conf line is not enough to get the
nvidia module to load, I have to insmod -f the thing - it does work
happily once it's forced in though, the refusal to insert the module in
the kernel may be a modutils issue so YMMV as always.
