[LARTC] load balancing and failover

Hi,
A friend of mine has 2 lines of 512kbps terminated in two Linux boxes.  
He now want to remove those 2 boxes and have some device which will 
loadbalance the two ISPs and also have a failover arrangement. But he 
has agreed to give me a chance to do it on Linux for my own 
satisfication.
Is this easy to do with lartc? How do I go about it exactly?  I have 
very less time to do it since his whole network will be done for that 
time and I cannot afford to play for long time. Is it worth trying it 
with lartc for academic sake atleast?
Can someone suggest some easy steps?

You can try out implementing configuring a load balancing and failover 
system referring to the following documents:

You will need to patch and recompile the linux kernel using the "routes" 
patch given at http://www.ssi.bg/~ja/#routes for dead gateway detection 
to work.

The load balancing part works fine but dead gateway detection (and hence 
failover) does not work always. It works best when your first hop 
gateway is down but may or may not work when a subsequent hop is down. 
In a recent case, I observed that dead gateway detection and the 
failover was working very well when one ISP failed but did not happen 
when the other one went down. So you can try your luck here.

Sigh!!!!!!!! I thought it must be very easy with lartc.
Also,  I cannot patch the kernel. It is a live system and the person 
there will definitely kill me if I even ask him.

It is actually easy. The LARTC How To does not take care of failover but 
load balancing works fine. So if you want just load balancing you can go 
with it. You can also try out any of the following approaches / scripts:

But nano.txt is probably the best way out.

You can get hold of a spare system or a hard disk and move it there 
after you set it up.

Thanks for the links. They will make excellent reading. He has prper 
lease lines and so  I thought it will be a piece of cake to do it in 
Linux. Guess I have to eat my words ;)

I made a script that uses a simple conf file and allows quite a lot of work
to be done in minutes. You can give it a chance even thought I guess you
need a basic knowledge of what you are doing (eg: what 'ip rule' does):

There is also a man page with some examples


I don't even know if other such script exists, so I'm not pretending this is
any better that others. It is just wat fitted to my need.


A nice option is to test links using tables to force packets to choose one
particular link. In a way this allows for an easy script that tests the
link/route (without a kernel patch) and takes decision in case the link is
down. To achieve thi I use mangle feature (OUTPUT) + ip rule fwmark. 


I wrote to this list some days ago on this purpouse, becouse kernel does not
always seem to understand wich ip should attach to the packets (this is my
compehension, at least  ;-).

[LARTC] Load balancing and failover

Hi all


i was going through the documents
i need to achive the following setup, but iam confused to deploy
but some one recomed me what will be good

        ------------------------
offic ------------------------  other office ----- Switch ----lan users
        ___________________


---  fiber link
___ wireless link


now i want fiber both the links to be load balance from other office to this
office
when one fiber down, it shoould shift to other fiber with full load
if other fiber down, it should shift to wireless

other side i have PC with 4 ethernet cards

1 connected to 1st fiber
2nd connected to 2nd fiber
3 is connected to wireless
4th is connect to local LAN of other side of office

OFFICE  side all connected to to my 3548XL Cisco Switch

i dont want to give any IP's to 1 2 3, they should work in bridge mode
4th will have one of the IP range of OFFICE .

iam using RH 9.0 with all patches

any one recomend me how can i achive this setup
