Perfect timing -- I just started a discussion list which needed
subscription moderation! However, I cannot get it to work for the
life of me.

I compiled the latest mlmmj and added a file "submod" with a single
email to my control/ directory, and when I attempt to subscribe
myself to the list, I first get the confirmation request via email,
which I respond to, and then I get a Mail Delivery failure:

> comix+confsub-2234c52a6b0c615d-natebeaty=gmail.com@lists.clixel.com
> local delivery failed

However, a file (subscribe1a39a8b053aabcec) is added to the
moderation/ directory, and the temp file is removed from the subconf/
directory.. yet the moderator email listed in "submod" never receives
an email.

I tried having a blank file for "submod" and seeing if it would send
a confirmation email to the "owner" email. I also tried adding a file
"moderators" in the control/ directory with the single email I listed
in "submod". Neither worked.

If I remove the "submod" file in control/, the confirmation email
(like the one that gives the error above) works fine and the user is
subscribed.

What am I doing wrong here? It looks like it's *almost* working.. but
I get no emails to the email listed in "submod" to confirm.

Nate.

This has nothing to do with subscriber moderation, since it's a
confirmation of subscription issue.

Subscriber moderation code doesn't kick in before after the subscriber
have acknowledged it's his/hers emailaddress.

What mailserver etc.? Did previous mlmmj versions work?

I would agree except when I remove the submod tunable from control/,
there is no Mail Delivery failure, and the user is able to confirm
their subscription just fine.

Well it seems mlmmj is getting the confirmation email, as it shows in
Exim's log and the file is removed from subconf/ and a file is
created in moderation/.

What is supposed to happen at that point? The email listed in submod
(or owner if it's empty) gets a confirmation email much like the
user's? And then the file disappears from moderation/ and the email
is moved to subscribers.d/, correct?

> What mailserver etc.? Did previous mlmmj versions work?

Sorry, I meant to include that in my first email. I'm on an up-to-
date Ubuntu Dapper box with Exim 4.60. I have been happily using
mlmmj 1.2.11 for quite a few months now with announce-only lists.
This is the first discussion list I've set up, and the owner asked
for subscription moderation. I had previously been using the debian-
packaged mlmmj, but compiled 1.2.12 for the submod capability.

My control/ dir:

I'm guessing this is important: "Child process of mlmmj_transport

don't see it for confirmation on my other lists...

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks,

Nate,

Thanks for catching this before 1.2.12 final!

Hmmm, I wonder why it would return 1 and not report anything in the
logs... weird indeed.

It's the exact same with an empty submod file, but something in owner
instead?

Yes, where you get the error messages from mlmmj in general.

I wonder why this works on postfix but not exim...

Have any other Exim users tried the submod functionality? Perhaps
it's my settings somehow -- I did have trouble with local users when
I first installed mlmmj. ( http://mlmmj.mmj.dk/archive/0788.html )

It's just strange that when I remove submod from control/ I can
respond to the confirmation messages without any problems. So it
seems the problem it must be in the area after the user confirms his/
her email and it moves on to send a msg to the owner or email listed
in submod. I am unfamiliar with C, so I am unable to troubleshoot the
code at all.

Nate.
