i686 binutils failing to build for SDK 7.0 build

i686 binutils failing to build for SDK 7.0 build

I'm trying to build a basic image using Arago, SDK 7.0 config (configs/amsdk/amsdk-07.00.00.00-config.txt) and binutils 2.20.1 is failing to compile for the i686 host system. 
I'm building on a Ubuntu 14.04 32bit VM. 

My bitbake command is: 
MACHINE=am335x-evm;bitbake core-image-minimal

The errors are:
binutils-native/2.20.1-r9/binutils-2.20.1/bfd/doc/bfd.texinfo:326: unknown command `colophon'
binutils-native/2.20.1-r9/binutils-2.20.1/bfd/doc/bfd.texinfo:337: unknown command `cygnus'

It looks like this was a known problem for building binutils that has been fixed a long time ago and since SDK 7.0 is released code I would have assumed the problem was taken care for the Arago build so I'm a little puzzled why I'm getting this now. 

Any help would be appreciated.

Matt,

Since you are using amsdk-07.00.00.00-config.txt config, you are building the 
same exact version that was released as AMSDK 7.0. That config is not being 
updated to pick up any latest code.

If you want to try latest code base, you better off trying arago-daisy-config.txt
That would pull in everything latest from corresponding Daisy branches, which 
is the latest stable release.

Denys, 

I intentionally picked SDK 7.0 because is it "tested" and released code so I figured it would have a better chance of working and being supported. If that is not the case please let me know. I want a good stable point to start development of my own image for a custom am335x board.

I did just figure out that the problem is the newer version of texinfo (version 5.2) packaged with Ubuntu 14.04 is not compatible with the older version of binutils (version 2.20.1) that is built for SDK 7.0. I manually downgraded my system to texinfo 4.13a and got past the error.

Matt,

That is fine - if you want to base your work on an official release, you 
should stick to AMSDK 7.0 config. I thought you were trying to get the latest 
code pulled in, which would be a different approach.

AMSDK 7.0 was based on Dylan, which is now 3 versions behind the latest Yocto 
Project release. It was validated on Ubuntu 12.04 (and 10.04), so it may have 
incompatibility issues with newer Linux distros, like you found out. This is a 
more generic issue - the wider the time gap between the versions of the tools 
being used (e.g. Linux host distro, cross toolchain, etc) and the components 
being built (e.g. kernel, bootloader, user space apps, etc), the higher 
chances are for extra issues, breakage and other weird problems...

Again, see the other reply - I got an impression by the last paragraph above 
that the requirement was to pull in some recent fixes for binutils. That won't 
be done in AMSDK 7.0, as it's already released and closed.

It's a point of view - Daisy is already a stable release of the Yocto Project. 
Arago currently is based on Daisy, but it hasn't been relesed yet.

It seems that a question about creating a image based on released and tested software i.e the SDK 7.0 tags in Arago is an appropriate question for this list. If not this list then where?

I really just want to know where to start and the TI websites, and documentation provide a lot of options but very little guidance and it seems to very much be a moving target. Typically a good place to start is a released version but your comments seem to indicate that it's not so. I'm sorry if posted in the wrong place it seemed like this was the best list to get an answer specific to building source from Arago.

[Franklin] Don't mind us. You asked the question in the right place. You just got caught up in a difference in opinion discussion.

If you want to try the latest and greatest then Denys is right using the Daisy config (latest arago config) would be the best bet. Things are still in flux a bit so if you don't mind see random issues, breakage here and there then this is a good option. In general things get fixed relatively quickly. Also there gets to a point where the BSP packages (wats in meta-ti) is pretty much finalized which usually means your good to go and things are pretty much stable.

I would use the AMSDK 7 config if you want to create a release that mimics a specific AMSDK. From a support perspective outside of this mailing list, TI will support a specific SDK which includes kernel, u-boot, filesystem etc... So using that sdk config would be the right place to begin although generally from an OE perspective it has outdated components. But if you start asking questions on E2E (TI support forum) then you may hit a roadblock since the 3.14 LTS kernel or U-boot 2014.07 hasn't been released in an official TI SDK so people may not know what your talking about

My above comment was addressed to Franklin - he mentioned the support outside 
of this mailing list, hence my reply.

Like I said above - if you want to start with a released version, that's fine. 
From your first email it wasn't clear - it sounded like you wanted to backport 
some fixes to binutils from newer versions back to AMSDK 7.0, to which I 
replied accordingly, suggesting to use the latest code base instead, due to 
the reasons outlined above. If you are not comfortable with latest code base, 
that's fine too.

So, questions about creating an image of your own does fall into the subject 
of this mailing list.

[Franklin] Meta-arago and meta-ti has been relatively unstable recently with other pieces of software under development with varying degrees of stability. So outside those two layers things maybe stable but there is a bit of turbulence while we work through a release.

I would just prefer giving people (myself) a chance to help others out especially if there are using an SDK specific config.

Would that be a point release for AMSDK? Say, AMSDK 7.1?
I don't mind that at all, i.e. backporting fixes to older branches/releases, I 
was just pointing to the fact that amsdk-07.00.00.00-config.txt is a locked 
down configuration and is not moving and not pulling anything new. That's all.

Like I said above - I don't mind backports and fixes for older branches and 
releases. That is a valid development effort. But that is not the main focus 
for me and this mailing list. So, when it's not clear what the requirements 
are, I assume the latest. That's exactly what I said above, which does not 
preclude using this mailing list to discuss development on older base...

Indeed, things are being stabilized now in meta-ti and meta-arago for the 
upcoming internal release soon, which will be used as a base for the next 
AMSDK.

Historically, people coming to this mailing list (as well as meta-ti or other 
community lists) are looking for integrating all the latest components and 
utilizing latest code base, while developing their product - they don't mind 
a bit of instability. I'm not used to support questions about past releases on 
this list. Usually those go to E2E forums and such. That's all. So, once it's 
clearly identified to be such a question, I'm fine leaving it to you to take 
it.
