Maybe I was unclear. The sound appears *only* on the rear speakers. The
front speakers remain silent. Surely this is not what users want?

OK then it's a problem. But you mentioned that 6-channel playback work, so
basically all channels work unless you pass 2-channel samples?
Anyway, try to update alsa-lib to the latest version. There were bugs in
alsa-lib regarding channel routing.

I understand slowly what's going on there.
The 4.0/5.1 surround outputs use the second DAC. The behavior of this DAC
is somewhat strange. If only 2-channel is used, it's routed to rear. If
4 or more channels are used, it works as 4.0/5.1.
And, in surround40 and surround51 definitions, there is no restriction of
channels. That is, if the PCM is opened with 2 channels, it is regarded
as the rear output.
Maybe we need a route plugin wrapping surround40/51 to fix the channel
numbers...

OK, I understand how this is happening. Some sort of rerouting would be
useful here. I prefer not needing to specify different devices depending
on the number of channels. Shout if you want me to test something.

The attached patch should fix this problem.
This doesn't change the default behavior of plug plugin, i.e. the
2-channel sampless are copied only to front and rest speakers are silent.
For a more clever channel expansion, it'd better to create a new plugin.

That patch makes plug:surround51 work as expected with two channels.
However, it is now failing with 6-channel sound. Front and surround/lfe
are fine, but right rear is about half volume, and left rear is barely
audible. Playing 2-channel sound on the "rear" device works, so I'm sure
the speakers are connected properly.

Summary: playing 2-channel sound on surround device uses rear
speakers
Description:
If I play regular 2-channel stereo sound specifying device "surround51" or
"surround40" (or either of those with a "plug:" prefix) the sound is
output on the rear speakers. 6-channel playback is correct.

Sorry, that last bit must have been caused by something else. Muting and
unmuting the "PCM" control somehow fixed it, even though the PCM mute
otherwise only affects the front speakers.
With the patch, 2-channel samples are padded to 6 by the plug: wrapper so
the sound is correctly played on the front speakers. 6-channel playback
is unchanged, as it should.

OK, closing this bug now. The better upmixing is a different thing (which
will be improved in near future).
