Hi everybody,
I have done some linux kernel (2.4.x) recompilations many times (about
4-5), but always there were problems or some sort of defects in it. I also
had to spend lots of time, in figuring out which option highlights or
disables other options.
So, I was hoping if I could find ready-made configuration files on the
net. Also, if I could find configuration information and new
experimentations. Is there any site for that?

  Thanks in advance,
  Subhash Bhushan.

... with regard the time, it's a 'great' investment, and time well spent.

a 'ready-made' ./.config is NOT going to be much help, UNLESS it
suits your (a) hardware, and (b) intended use. however, if you found
one, the only real benefit would be a 'short-term' easy fix ...

Hi All,

We are porting our Network Management application from Linux 7.2 to
Linux 8. The application has many 3rd party software like tomcat 4.1.24,
sybase 8, jdk1.4.1 , jakarata oro.

Our assumption is that we will need to download jdk1.4.1 for Linxu 8 ?

We would like to know which other tools need a fresh download which are
Linux 8 compatible.

Will the same 3rd party sofware used for Linux 7.3 work for Linux 8 also
?

Will appreciate any help on this.

Thanks in Advance,
Sarika

If I am not wrong you are talking about Red Hat Linux versions

There is no difference of jdk1.4.1 for both versions

Yes for Tomcat Jakartha oro and sybase I am not sure.

Actually, Blackdown offers gcc2.95 and gcc3.2 builds. Either is fine for
your "Linux 8" (redhat), the gcc3.2 build won't work for an 'out of the
box'
Redhat 7.2 install.

Sun's VM will work just fine on either as stated by Murali above. .

Well I am still trying to compile my own kernel. Getting close
I think. Using RH Enterprise 3 on a PII 400, Compaq.
Using kernel 2.4.21-9EL

After using make menuconfig etc and saving the configuration. I
ran make dep, make clean, make bzImage and then make install.
No error reports.
However, when I boot to the new Custom kernel I get the following
errors:

Mounting root file system
Mount error 19 mounting ext3
pivotroot: pivot_root(/sysroot,/sysroot/initrd) failed :2
Freeing unused kernel memory: 164k freed
Kernel panic: No init found.
Try passing init= option to kernel

And there it sits.Initrd img file for the custom and regular
kernel are in the boot directory. The custom file is 87.3k
and the regular is 161.3k.

The only thing being added to the custom file are some of
the Ham Radio stuff like ax25, netrom etc. Those were the
only additions made.

When running make menuconfig, when I get to the yam line
and want to exit and save I seem to go around in circles.
A few times, I used the double escape code to get out.
Not sure what the proper procedures are. I have half
a dozen or so HOW TO documents and they are all very
similar. I also have RH Enterprise Linux 3 Administration
guide Appendix A, Building a Custom Kernel. Still no cigar!!

From what you see above, what am I doing wrong??

Thanks

Looks like your kernel can't mount your root partition because it needs the
ext3 device driver...and to get that, it needs to load the initial ramdisk
image...which hangs out on the as-yet unreadable ext3 partition.

Suggest you try a recompiled kernel with built-in ext3 support, instead of as
a loadable module. Once you do that, you'll probably find you can do away
with the convoluted initrd business altogether.

Hope this helps.
