This weekend I will be at FOSDEM http://www.fosdem.org/ .
I will have a SE Linux play machine on the LAN there, and I'll be available
for key-signing, impromptu talks on security, etc.

Someone asked in a private message whether there could be a "capture the flag"
contest.
Sure, I'm up for that. If you can discover or change the administrative
password, create a file in the root directory, or delete/over-write critical
system files such that the machine will not boot or can't be logged into, or
if you read the contents of a file I put in a known location on the hard
drive, then you win the contest.
Honorable mentions will be given for anyone who discovers bugs in SE Linux or
the installed policy which can't be used for cracking the machine.
The prize won't be significant. Maybe dinner at a good restaurant in Brussels
(and of course public acknowledgement).

Hi there,
I am planning to go to FOSDEM 2004.
Perhaps some of us could co-ordinate a meetup?

I considered giving a talk about the internals of GRUB 2 in the Hurd
developers room, although I'm not sure if that talk will take place.
I am way too shy to give such public talk, sorry...
Who on this mailing list will go to FOSDEM? It would be nice if we
could meet there so we can see each other in real life. :)
Thanks,
Marco

IHMO, you are the best one for such a talk, since you are the most
active developer currently (sorry that it's not me).
I'd like to describe my idea. The meaning of attending a conference is,
in my definition, to meet people. With this opportunity, you can get
touch with other developers and sometimes they are extremely talented.
So this may give more developers, this may give you enlightenment (such
as really new ideas) or this may give you more good friends. In any
case, this is very useful for your life.
And, the most effective way to begin talking with people is to make a
presentation, because people recognize how you look, your name, your
interest, etc., thus it becomes easier to speak something to you at the
first time.
I understand that you hesitate. I had the same feeling when I was
younger. But it is not shameful to do a public talk at all. In
particular, if you make a good (or not bad) presentation, you would
feel satisfied. Even if it is a failure, you could grow thanks to this
experience, and you would definitely be able to make a better one next
time.
I myself don't plan to do this, because I'm not active at the moment, I
think I will have to make one (not for GRUB, though) in LSM/RMLL next
year again, and I'd like someone else to do this. The last reason is
important for me, since becoming a presentator is the only way to
obtain public interest on you, if you are not the project maintainer. I
personally believe that all developers should be appreciated equally,
but people only see maintainers in reality. I feel this is unfair.

I'm planning to go, perhaps only one day. It takes only one hour for me
to go to the university, so I have no reason to stay there.

Right, and I know that. That is the reason why I want to give a talk
at the Hurd developers room. As for a lightning talk, they are too
short and I am not a good public speaker. Perhaps another time,
sorry...

May I ask what kind of talk you will give there?

It does not bother me personally.

At Saturday there is a special room for Hurd developers. We can meet
there, if you'd like? I think most people there will recognize me.
What do you think of that?

Ok. I may not force you to do that. :)
I appreciate if someone else is willing.
> May I ask what kind of talk you will give there?
ERP5. I didn't want to say this here, since it sounds like an
advertisement, even if it is Free Software. If you want to know more,
please use a search engine. I'm not willing to talk about this in
details in this mailing list.
BTW, my talk in RMLL 2004 was not successful... I had assumed that the
audience would be mainly computer gurus, so I had made a technical
presentation. But the audience was mainly managers, and so they were
expecting a more business-oriented presentation. I must have been more
like a sales man. The audience of RMLL is truly unpredictable for me.
It changes every year.

I hope I will be able to wake up early. It is hard to wake up in the
morning on Saturday for me, as it is the first day of a weekend. :(

Openembedded at fosdem 2007
Openembedded was at fosdem 2007 and it was a succes.
Fosdem started out with a meeting on the market of Brussels, because de
"Roy d'Espagne" was kind of full the oe people decided to meet at another place.
After some phonecalls me and Likewise where able to find the place.
In the place we had all together a homemade beer from the house and talked about
various issues. It was great to see each other because for example I had never seen
most people before.
After some beers most of us left for the astridhotel and me Xora and Likewise left
to see some some other pubs.
On saturday morning we went to the university and we went to our booth, I was the first to
arrive at the booth thanks to the friend of Klaas van Gent who gave me a lift. We had sufficient
time to take care of our booth and Laibsch, Koen, Xora , Likewise, Hrw,Zecke took with me care of the booth. In the beginning we had some trouble with Belgium power outlets but hapilly Jan was so kind to donate power outlets to us !!.
Saturday was the most busy day we had a constant stream of visitors to our booth and we received
two donations of hardware and a couple of donations are comming up. We received a donation from Trolltech who donated the greenphone to us and we received some flashcards and a orinoco wireless-card. Furthermore we talked with the guy from the one laptop per child initiative, maybe we will get one to put support for it in oe. Furthermore there was a guy who will send us a palm treo.
The openmoko presentation was visited by many more people as we expected and not everybody that
wanted to get in was able to get in. Overall my conclussion is that the fosdem for oe was quite
succesfull, somethings we need to do better in the future, we need to have more space (one table was not enough) and we need to have more promotional material.

Sunday was a lot quieter than saturday, I guess a lot of people only
came in for one day.
We still had a fairly steady stream of people passing the booth though.
We had one cash donation to the OE project which Florian handled.
Hrw got donated a n770 (lucky bugger)
No-one in OE managed to score the pepperpad :-(
The Dark Rum drinking session ended up not happening as we didnt find a
pub with dark rum.

And the pub was even called "Rhum Rhum" for crying out loud!
We still had a good time though :)

Hey guys, whats happening for FOSDEM? What goodies do we wish to show?
What goodies do we need to bring?
I ask now as Im on holiday without internet connection next week and
that only leaves 4 days if I need to prepare anything for the show.
Lets really sell OE this year, especially as emdebian is there.

This time we really _need_ an attractive poster and flyers to giveaway.
Who has time to come up with a text for an A4 flyer?
Who is artist enough to come up with an A3 poster?
Who can print? Who will bring it?

Less than two days, attached some last info from the staff.
The constitutional meeting for OpenEmbedded e.V. will take place on saturday
evening. I hope to meet all interested people during saturday at the booth to
tell you the exact date and location. I'll also mail it once it's finalized
(probably after the friday beer event).
Some rules for the people who stand at the booth:
* Don't hack all the time, try to actually talk with interested people
* Be nice and polite
* Give handouts
* Point commercial people to openembedded-private if they want to hire someone
That's all I can think of at the moment. Let's make this FOSDEM appearance a
broad success!
See you at the beer event or at booth!
Cheers,
:M:

If anybody would like to connect or discuss patches, design and so on, feel
free to drop by at coreboot booth at FOSDEM. Non-coreboot GRUB topics are
welcome as well
