Is there any reason the buffer_bytes_max couldn't be increased beyond 128K on
the Intel 8x0 driver? I'm running into overruns on a capture system when it
gets a bit busy.

No, but note that this buffer is 0.68sec for 48kHz/stereo/16-bit stream
which should be quite enough. I suggest to tune your system or change your
application.
