I suggested the Atomic Filesystem, but Mom pointed out that it added an
additional metaphor to the fastman graphic. I am still thinking about
whether she is right.

Everything you always wanted in a filesystem, but were afraid to pay for.

Too linux infighty

maybe something around:

Reiser4 / WinFS - which one are YOU running, Today?

Now even the ext3 team would wear that ;)

Well, of course it sounds like an ad. It is. What kind of statement do
you want to make? Before your users buy a t-shirt you need to know what
they most identify with on Reiser4.

Some haven't tried it yet so it's hard to identify.

Of those who have tried it and use mostly use it, what do they love
about it?

Fast?
Flexible?

Sometimes it can be hard to transfer an abstract concept into something
people really identify with.

What are you most proud of with Reiser4?

Those are cool, as is "Plug in to Reiser4", but I think it should be
something _bigger_...

Come the Revolution. Reiser4.

Mission - Vision - Reiser4

Reiser4 - Why Settle for Less?

When Security isn't Enough.

Those do maybe sound a bit over-the-top, and I sure ain't no marketer,
so I'll just see what gets printed :)

Maybe we should show say "my FS is faster than your FS"? It is, isn't it?

Or one of these:
	the file IS the system
	the sequil to SQL

What's the current name for 'metas'? I vote again for ... here:
	echo 1 > /.../wicked_speed

Or any number of commands we could run with some fairly simple plugins:

$ cat reiser4.mp3/.../id3/artist
Hans Reiser, Namesys, and the Band of Hackers

$ cd stuff.zip
$ cat readme.txt
and you thought Windows native Zip support was nice...

'ReiserFS is fastest at reading Journals, is Yours?'

'ReiserFS > *.'

'Sync this... ReiserFS'

'Sync this. ReiserFS already did.'

No, please NO such sentences!

Even if Reiser4 can offer such nice features, these terms are burnt.
These shirts should be worn.

Please use some intelligent slogans.

"The Living Filesystem" --- like "Living daylight" ;-)
or
"Plug-in To Reiser4!" (kill the 4) ;-)

are much better.

Stay absent from slogans 'mine is "longer" then yours' (faster) etc.
They are distressing.

Much success for your company!

thanks to hans reiser and all the reiserfs developers for building
a great filesystem :D

now if only debian would change their options for the filesystem
choice on the bf install images that has ext3 as a more mature fs
and reiserfs as a less mature fs.. heh.

at my last job, we have many government services running on debian
linux with reiserfs, and were very happy with it. just thought i
would point that out :D (company is devis.com)

Yeah, I was thinking about that double-entendre. To rise is to go up,
escalate etc. But I was thinking about how to say it. Yours is pretty
close.

"The Reising Tide!" as in the old saying...

"The rising tide floats all boats"

We are the boats...

Out of all the suggestions, I like this one the most. I don't know
where the trademarks are on that unfortunately though.

Following close behind that suggestion though, I also liked:
'Sync this. ReiserFS already did.'
'When Security isn't Enough.'

I was just thinking that most good advertising slogans appeal to the
visual centers of the brain. Think about it. To get people's attention
you usually don't appeal to the left half of the brain. Yes the
engineer in you is just amazed when we read bonnie or iozone stats, but
slogans are call forth visuals, and easy concepts.

Think about it. A t-shirt that has iozone stats on it versus one that
has a picture of a hard drive platter burning rubber like a
high-performance tire. Which one appeals to you emotionally? Which one
indicates speed better to the emotional mind?

'Reise to a new level!'

(sorry really bad pun ;-)

I don't know. The latter makes it sound like Reiserfs causes the harddrive
to release the sacred blue smoke.

May I make the following suggestions in the interest of this thread.

If the goal is to create a slogan that will attract PHBs, hire a professional
marketing team and be done with it.

If the goal is to create a t-shirt that thinkgeek would like to sell,
get it on slashdot.

Me, I'd rather know about
"Does Reiserfs4 allow unmodified samba to provide Windows ACLs?"
"Does Reiserfs4 come with quota support at this point?"
"How does reiserfs4 cope with catastrophic events?"

Great ideas, both of them.

I recall a "design a t-shirt" thread/competition on /. a couple of years
ago. The editors will _probably_ be up for it, but are also _probably_
wary of becoming a free-competition service, so you might not get your
story posted. There are lots of other /. like sites, however, if the main
site rejects your story. If you go for /., I think it would be better if
the request came from Hans himself.

How about a reference to the tail-packer? I don't know if it has been improved

This is the first witty one, but we got rid of tails conceptually in
reiser4, and now we either store in formatted items the whole file or
none of it.

Hiring professionals might work. But I doubt slashdot would have much
to offer. I don't think the average slashdotter knows what's so great
about Reiser4. The majority of those who do are probably on this list
already.

That is true... I just joined the list about a month ago. I didn't
know what you guys were up to until reading these threads the past
month. I only joined because me and a friend are working on a new GUI
for rfstool (for extracting files from a ReiserFS partition to
Windows) as all the only one I could find was crap. Speaking of which
I never made the announcement here, and it already supports exporting
files and entire folders. I mostly didn't say anything because it's
still heavy alpha stage and I still need to link in a ton more of the
UI, and work on the file listing.

You can check it out here (SVN or just use HTTP):
http://gnuk.net/svn/rfs/

Anyway, keep up the awesome work on Reiser4.

Tierra

With reiserfs4 offering transactional semantics and all that (to a
degree) and being fast like someone on speed, I still love the

Reiserfs - ACID for your files!

This one is really funny :)

I got an idea, which may be inconvenient, but what about having different
shirts, maybe two or three, one with a funny slogan, one with a technical
slogan and one with a bombastic slogan?

Just an idea..

I believe the official name is Reiser4, not Reiserfs4. Is this true

This mailing list convinced me that fs in a mount name is uninformative,
though ReiserFS V4 is considered a synonym in documentation and
licensing to Reiser4.

But shouldn't it be
Reiser4: No fsck.
or
Reiser4: Fsck, no.

Aren't those slogans AGAINST Reiser4?

I mean, consider the pun that "fsck, no!" revolves around and the situations
in which you exclaim it...

That's why "fsck'ing fast" is a funnier and better slogain, imo.

Not that the semantic tree pass is THAT fast on a big hard drive, even :P :)

Not to step on anyone's toes, which I still do all the time, please print
Reiser4 on the t-shirt. It's the name that "everyone" uses :)

But I guess this is what you already said, so I'll just go do something
else ;)

I personally don't like substitute obscenities --- people who want to
swear should do so --- so I won't use fsck as suggested.

In that case it's a t-shirt that could be used by reiser4 supporters
and detractors.
Perhaps a punctuation change is in order.

The Idea:
Use REISERFS4 as the trunk of a tree with descriptive words as branches and a
witty or relavent logo as the grass of the tree. This idea would look much
better as a graphic with color eg brown centre letters for REISERFS4 that
were larger and stood out and green for the word branches and grass etc.

P.S I know this is probably of the mark but it is a little bit different so I
thought it may be useful

Also, if "Fast" was dropped, there'd be no extra S hanging around and
it'd say Reiser4 which is the street name ;)

Then everyone should buy XXXXXXL shirts just so the tree would dance on
a windy day :D

Personally, I love this suggestion.

Reiser4 doesn't need a slogan. Try it, you'll love it :)

The filesystem problem is solved.

How about

"I wanted to have a reliable filesystem and all I got is that lousy shirt"

everything after "and" is crossed out and above/below is:
"I have it! ReiserFS 4!"

I think we could use the words just as they are with out a tree graphic
only with this slight modifacation.
Put REISERFS4 in a different color from the rest of the words.

If you think you can use the idea then your welcome to change what you like :)

The main logic of the idea is that the tree concept is quite central to the
filesystem. Anybody who was familiar with the concepts behind the filesystem
would probably connect the idea, and those who didn't would still have all
the descriptive words and/or phrases to think about.

Mom, with these sorts of things you just give them a try, see what they
look like, and not even the artist knows until she is done. Yes?
