If you think that i have swapped my speakers, it is not true: mixer works
correctly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 Tim - 03-02-04 02:56
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have exactly the same problem: Since I changed from an old OSS driver
version with precompiled parts to ALSA, in more or less 95% of all cases
the channels are swapped. (au8820)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 kernel_bug - 04-09-04 11:54
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, with last release (1.0.4) it works almost correctly. Channels swapped
only on first playing after loading modules. After this, all works
correctly.

This bug is believed to be fixed in latest patch posted on OpenVortex devel
list. Will be sent to the ALSA guys now.

THis bug has been fixed in alsa-driver version beyond 1.0.4 (to be released
at a unknown time). A patch is available at:
http://docencia.mat.utfsm.cl/~mjander/aureal/alsa/aureal-2.6.5.diff.gz
The credits for the bug discovery are for "claudia" (VortexOfSound
forum).

Channels are still swapped (always) when you are playing something first
time after loading modules. At least on my system, the following steps
always result in channel swapping:
1. unload ALSA modules (I usually do it with `service alsasound stop`)
2. Load them back
3. Play the sound.

Could you send me more details ? I really don't understand exactly what do
you mean.

Submitter: Is this bug still present? Are the channels swapped just
after the module is loaded?

AFAIK this bug was solved a long time ago. It was supposedly caused by a
incorrect routing table initialization (bug found by Claudia). That fact,
i guess, leaved some random routes interferening with other intentional
routes.

Did anyone still get this bug or may we close it ?

> Did anyone still get this bug or may we close it ?

Yes, I still get this bug. Channels are swapped just after the module is
loaded. First attempt to play something causes output with swapped
channels, all consequent attempts cause normal output.

"A long time ago" there was fixed another bug concerned with _random_
channel swap at _any_ attempt of output. Now we _always_ have swapped
channels, but only when you try to output something just after the module
is loaded.

I use ALSA drivers from the Linux kernel 2.6.11.

Thanks.

Try the following patch to see if there is a SDAC bit detect problem on
those stereo AC97 codec manufactured before AC97 2.1 spec , since we can
assume all au8820 have stereo codec.

This means you cannot just copy pci/ac97/*.*

Do you find "vortex: IRQ fifo error" in system log when you play sound ?

http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/openvortex-dev/2005-03/msg00015.html

Using "vortex_adbdma_stopfifo()" instead of "vortex_adbdma_pausefifo()"
in snd_vortex_pcm_trigger() (ie. in the same way before au88x0 migrated
from alsa-driver to alsa-kernel) seem to fix the front/rear channels swap
when playing 4 channels sound on my au8830.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 Raymond - 01-06-06 18:15
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Please try to add the vortex_dump_route routine at the end of following
routines:-
1) vortex_connect_default()
2) snd_vortex_pcm_hw_params()
3) snd_vortex_pcm_hw_free()

and post the system log when the channels are swapped/normal.

void vortex_dump_route(vortex_t * vortex)
{
     u32 addr,value;
     u8  src,dest;
     int i;
     for (i=0; i<VORTEX_ADB_CHNBASE_COUNT; i++) {
         addr=VORTEX_ADB_CHNBASE+i*4;
         value=hwread(vortex->mmio,addr);
         if ( value != ROUTE_MASK ) {
  	     src=(value >>ADB_SHIFT)& ADB_MASK;
	     dest=value & ADB_MASK;
	     printk(KERN_INFO "%.8x adb_chnbase(%.2x) %.8x src=%.2x
dest=%.2x\n",
        		addr,i,value,src,dest);

     };
     for (addr=VORTEX_ADB_RTBASE; addr<VORTEX_ADB_CHNBASE; addr+=4) {

Summary: On au8820 left and right channels are swapped
Description:
In most cases, left and right channels are swapped. But in approx. 5% cases
all OK. Looks like the matter is somewhere in byte alignment...

> Try the speaker-test in alsa-utils
> speaker-test -D hw:0,0 -c 2
Just after `modprobe snd-au8820` and `alsactl restore`:
=================================
$./speaker-test -D hw:0,0 -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.6

Playback device is hw:0,0
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Sine wave rate is 440.0000Hz
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2 to 16384
Period size range from 1 to 1024
Buffer time size 2525
To choose buffer_size = 2520
To choose period_size = 315
was set period_size = 256
was set buffer_size = 2560
  - Front Left
  - Front Right
  - Front Left
  - Front Right
=================================
Channels are swapped (e.g., when speaker-test says 'Front left' I hear
sound from right speaker). Mixer works correctly.

Running speaker-test again:
=================================
$ ./speaker-test -D hw:0,0 -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.6

Playback device is hw:0,0
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Sine wave rate is 440.0000Hz
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2 to 16384
Period size range from 1 to 1024
Buffer time size 2525
To choose buffer_size = 2520
To choose period_size = 315
was set period_size = 256
was set buffer_size = 2560
  - Front Left
  - Front Right
  - Front Left
=================================
This time (and all consequent) all works fine.

Summary: On au8820 left and right channels are swapped
Description:
In most cases, left and right channels are swapped. But in approx. 5% cases
all OK. Looks like the matter is somewhere in byte alignment...

Try the speaker-test in alsa-utils

speaker-test -D hw:0,0 -c 2

Please post the output of

lspci -vvn

cat /proc/asound/au8820/codec97#0/ac97#0-0+regs

Just after `modprobe snd-au8820` and `alsactl restore`:
=================================
$./speaker-test -D hw:0,0 -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.6

Playback device is hw:0,0
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Sine wave rate is 440.0000Hz
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2 to 16384
Period size range from 1 to 1024
Buffer time size 2525
To choose buffer_size = 2520
To choose period_size = 315
was set period_size = 256
was set buffer_size = 2560
  - Front Left
  - Front Right
  - Front Left
  - Front Right
=================================
Channels are swapped (e.g., when speaker-test says 'Front left' I hear
sound from right speaker). Mixer works correctly.

Running speaker-test again:
=================================
$ ./speaker-test -D hw:0,0 -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.6

Playback device is hw:0,0
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Sine wave rate is 440.0000Hz
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2 to 16384
Period size range from 1 to 1024
Buffer time size 2525
To choose buffer_size = 2520
To choose period_size = 315
was set period_size = 256
was set buffer_size = 2560
  - Front Left
  - Front Right
  - Front Left
=================================
This time (and all consequent) all works fine.

If you think that i have swapped my speakers, it is not true: mixer works
correctly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 Tim - 03-02-04 02:56
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have exactly the same problem: Since I changed from an old OSS driver
version with precompiled parts to ALSA, in more or less 95% of all cases
the channels are swapped. (au8820)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 kernel_bug - 04-09-04 11:54
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, with last release (1.0.4) it works almost correctly. Channels swapped
only on first playing after loading modules. After this, all works
correctly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 mjander - 04-09-04 18:35
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This bug is believed to be fixed in latest patch posted on OpenVortex devel
list. Will be sent to the ALSA guys now.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 mjander - 04-17-04 18:59
----------------------------------------------------------------------
THis bug has been fixed in alsa-driver version beyond 1.0.4 (to be released
at a unknown time). A patch is available at:
http://docencia.mat.utfsm.cl/~mjander/aureal/alsa/aureal-2.6.5.diff.gz
The credits for the bug discovery are for "claudia" (VortexOfSound
forum).

Channels are still swapped (always) when you are playing something first
time after loading modules. At least on my system, the following steps
always result in channel swapping:
1. unload ALSA modules (I usually do it with `service alsasound stop`)
2. Load them back
3. Play the sound.

Could you send me more details ? I really don't understand exactly what do
you mean.

Submitter: Is this bug still present? Are the channels swapped just
after the module is loaded?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 mjander - 03-10-05 16:44
----------------------------------------------------------------------
AFAIK this bug was solved a long time ago.

Thanks.

If you think that i have swapped my speakers, it is not true: mixer works
correctly.

I have exactly the same problem: Since I changed from an old OSS driver
version with precompiled parts to ALSA, in more or less 95% of all cases
the channels are swapped. (au8820)

 kernel_bug - 04-09-04 11:54

Ok, with last release (1.0.4) it works almost correctly. Channels swapped
only on first playing after loading modules. After this, all works
correctly.

This bug is believed to be fixed in latest patch posted on OpenVortex devel

THis bug has been fixed in alsa-driver version beyond 1.0.4 (to be released
at a unknown time). A patch is available at:

Channels are still swapped (always) when you are playing something first
time after loading modules. At least on my system, the following steps
always result in channel swapping:
1. unload ALSA modules (I usually do it with `service alsasound stop`)
2. Load them back
3. Play the sound.

Thanks.

Summary: On au8820 left and right channels are swapped
Description:
In most cases, left and right channels are swapped. But in approx. 5% cases
all OK. Looks like the matter is somewhere in byte alignment...

AFAIK this bug was solved a long time ago. It was supposedly caused by a
incorrect routing table initialization (bug found by Claudia). That fact,
i guess, leaved some random routes interferening with other intentional
routes.

Did anyone still get this bug or may we close it ?

Yes, I still get this bug. Channels are swapped just after the module is
loaded. First attempt to play something causes output with swapped
channels, all consequent attempts cause normal output.

"A long time ago" there was fixed another bug concerned with _random_
channel swap at _any_ attempt of output. Now we _always_ have swapped
channels, but only when you try to output something just after the module
is loaded.

I use ALSA drivers from the Linux kernel 2.6.11.

Thanks.
