SMSC LPC47M192 - "Device is disabled, will not use"

I have a chip on my motherboard which says "SMsC LPC47M192-NC", but the kernel 
module for it (kernel 2.6.12-rc5-mm1) doesn't work:

In the dmesg output it says:

What does this mean? How do I get this chip to tell me fan speed and CPU

It means that the logical device is disabled and it most cases it means that this chip is not used for hw. monitoring.
Please can you tell us your motherboard brand and model?
Also please run sensors-detect script include whole output in your next email.
Tell us what version of kernel and lm_sensors you use.

We can try to forcibly enable in future.

The box is an HP pavilion a302x. I think the motherboard is a Trigem Imperial, 
with an 845GL northbridge and an ICH4 southbridge.

This program will help you determine which I2C/SMBus modules you need to
load to use lm_sensors most effectively. You need to have i2c and
lm_sensors installed before running this program.
Also, you need to be `root', or at least have access to the /dev/i2c-*
files, for most things.
If you have patched your kernel and have some drivers built in, you can
safely answer NO if asked to load some modules. In this case, things may
seem a bit confusing, but they will still work.

It is generally safe and recommended to accept the default answers to all
questions, unless you know what you're doing.

 We can start with probing for (PCI) I2C or SMBus adapters.
 You do not need any special privileges for this.

Use driver `i2c-i801' for device 00:1f.3: Intel 82801DB ICH4

 through; we can't really help that. Also, some chips will be double detected;
 we choose the one with the highest confidence value in that case.
 If you found that the adapter hung after probing a certain address, you can
 specify that address to remain unprobed. That often
 includes address 0x69 (clock chip).

Have you compiled all i2c sensor device drivers as modules to get a 
successful probe?  Seems only the EEPROM detected?  Does BIOS screen 
show 'hardware health' or similar summary indicating you have h/w 
monitoring available?

sensors-detect says "Success... but not activated", which confuses me.

My BIOS displays the fan speed and CPU temperature, so I know the sensors are 
actually there, I just can't access them from linux.

I looked at the source, and the 'disabled' message (dmesg) is thrown 
as hwmon section of the SuperIO chip appears disabled, perhaps it 
was locked by BIOS.  (I know other SuperIO chipset's can lock settings)

If box is recent or laptop, you don't want to interfere with CPU 
cooling / clock control stuff.  Access via ACPI instead, much safer.

I know nothing of the particular driver, but we've covered the 
basics, you've provided info requested to clarify your issue, 
perhaps the driver author will chime in now :)

55 20 is really an SMSC LPC47M192

You tried smsc47m1, but:

The 47M15x and 47M192 chips contain a full 'hardware monitoring block'
in addition to the fan monitoring and control. The hardware monitoring
block is not supported by the driver.

Good news is that Tomas Holmqvist is working on that.

My developing has been down for a couple of months as I have had
courses in school that took much time. But I'll try to continue with
the final things this summer.

The driver works somewhat, but I haven't tested it munch and there's
the thing on making it a part of the sensor package. So don't count on
a finnished driver until fall.
