hi gals and dudes,
i'm postin' to both users and developers lists because both were tryin' to
solve my problem. i think i solved it. but i'm not sure, so here's what
i've done. i got my self an analogic stereo cable, and a converter jack
that converts it to rca. on the converter there's a label sayin' mono. i
plugged the stereo analogic cable into the digital output, and the other
rca converted end into the spdif in of my creativ dolby digital system.
now the system has the 'digital in' led turned on.
did i do somethin' that makes sense? cause my dolby digital system don't
have an optical in. everythin' seems to work digitally now. i'm a bit
confused do. did i do somethin' right? help! : ) thankyou! : )
ciao! : )

hi gals, hi dudes : )
so now i seem to have found a way to connect my digital out to the dolby
digtal system digital in. finally : ) what conerns me is xine. i set it up
to use alsa and five point one dolby digital, but i ran a vob ac3 test
file and only the front left and front right speakers seem to work. so i
played a dvd, and the audio seems pretty good. i mean, all of the speakers
seem to work, including the subwoofer.
so i'm includin' my xine config file, in case you can point me out to the
right tweaks i need to set up a good five point one dolby digital.
thankyou! : )
ciao! : )

Set speaker-arrangement to Pass Through instead of Surround 5.1
5.1 is for 6 channel analog outputs, pass through is for toslink or
spdif digital output.

also, i noticed that when i run xine with pass through option set and i
keep alsamixer open, 'iec958 optical raw' and 'audigy analog/digital
output jack' get checked if they were unchecked. the optical raw thing,
when it's checked, don't let me hear any audio from the digital output,
and i have to uncheck it to hear anythin'. but with pass through turned
on, optical raw is forced on. how come? help! thankyou! : )
ciao! : )

"iec958 optical raw" - is switched on, because ac3 data have to pass
through DSP unchanged.
try to play normal stereo wav file with aplay ("iec958 optical raw" will
be turned on and you will be not able to change volume - set lower
volume on your receiver, because otherways it will be high)
aplay -D spdif some.wav
You should be able to hear sound. If this works then problem can be,
your audigy is not correctly identified (some have bug in ac3 passtrough).
What alsa version do you use (cat /proc/asound/version)?

output for the version:
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.8 (Thu Jan 13 09:39:32 2005 UTC).
i remember readin' here in this mailin' list that my card is fully
supported from 1.0.9 on, so that may be the issue? anyway, playin' the
.wav file as you suggested works, and optical raw *is* turned on, so
that's not the issue. also playin' cds with both totem and xine-ui works
fine, although optical raw is not turned on and you *can* change the
volume from software.
now what i'm wonderin' is that maybe the alsa-driver i'm usin' ain't
appropriate, but that's what comes with my kernel (2.6.11). shall i
uncheck the modules from within the kernel and install gentoo's
alsa-driver, which is 1.0.9? i'll try, then i'll let y'all now.
ciao! : )

dolby digital works fine now, with the new 1.0.9 modules : ) i hadn't
thought about havin' an old alsa version, since i was usin' the kernel
builtin modules, and all the alsa packages were 1.0.9 already... really
had forgotten about alsa-driver : ) the dolby digital led even gets
turned on on my dolby digital external decoder! thankyou very much for
all the assistance, i'll post again if i have any problems! thankyou! : )
ciao! : )
