Linux SATA S.M.A.R.T. and SLEEP?

Under 2.6.13.2,

Is there any utility that I can use to put a SATA HDD to sleep?
Secondly, I notice I cannot access any of the HDD's S.M.A.R.T. functions 
on SATA drives?

Search for Jeff's patch 2.6.12-git4-passthru1.patch
I think this will be included RSN. This solves your two issues.

Someone needs to fix SATA drive ordering in the kernel so it matches 
GRUBs ordering, or perhaps GRUB needs fixing. I have run into
several situation where hd0,hd1 are in reverse order from what is 
reported when the Intel PII drivers load from the kernel, making in
necessary to swap the two values in the grub config.

User-space issue?  Four of the last five drives I buy are SATA, I

Seems to show up on FC2/3/4 installs on Piix motherboards. The drive 
parameters reported for /dev/sda, /dev/sdb are inverted based on the 
BIOS ordering of the SATA devices. It's more a BIOS issues I think. I 
have noted that IDE doesn't change the ordering, but the current Linux 
drivers do.

It's a BIOS issue. I had problems on my MSI nForce3 mainboard because when you 
select the "bootable SATA harddrive", it swaps round the ports so that the 
one you selected is hd0, and the others follow. I couldn't fix it, so in the 
end I just installed grub on both HDs separately, then use the BIOS toggle to 
switch between them.

There's more to it than that. With PATA drives I see issues with order 
as well, and they date back to the Redhat 7.x days, where the install 
chose one order for the scsi drivers and the boot chose another. With 
IDE the order in which drivers are loaded affects the drive naming.

It would be great to have some way to match drives with names, but there 
doesn't seem to be a single solution for PATA, SATA, SCSI and hotplug. 
Something like mounts using UUID of the filesystem, but for the drives.

I do use pluggable drives for backup, load modules for various 
controllers on demand, etc, so I'm aware that the most reliable 
solutions seem to involve either reduced flexibility, human intervention 
at boot, or both.

I believe it would be pretty easy for userspace hotplug scripts
(udev and pals) to assign drives names by matching model/serialno,
if that's what you had in mind.

That's the functionality I have in mind, the problem is finding the 
model and serial number info for all the various types. In some "really 
works" plug and play world there would be software to generate something 
like the UUID, and a nice table of what to call it. That doesn't quite 
seem to be the case yet, and it makes life a bit dificult if you need 
raw partitions on plugable devices.

Not impossible, but PITA right now. Anyone looking for a topic for their 
thesis? ;-)

Have the IDE and SATA driver layer check the BIOS ordering and preserve 
it during registration of the IDE and SATA devices for boot.

You probably want this patch as well, at least the first hunk.
It fixes a potential memory leak that could cause lock-ups when using
hdparm or smartctl/smartd.

When I tried that patch recently, smartctl stopped working.
Reverted.  Works again.

Thank you for mentioning this, it makes using SATA drives in production 
look more appealing. I like to be proactive on drive health and check it 
regularly.

  Lilo is not the only bootloader which do not make random assumptions
 on the order of the drives - you should also try Gujin...
