Hi,
 
Can anybody say if there is a pin compatible device available to use in
place of the National LM78 which is obsolete and not going RoHS compliant?

We don't have anything listed in the list below but it may give you some 
ideas. Of course check with Nat'l and with Maxim-Dallas.
