mailing list filters?

Hello all.

Searching a little bit about the spam problems. On the "[Alsa-devel]
crypto layer in alsa" thread says that this is a know problem.

Why not filter all except for text and patch (goodbye HTML, JPG, etc)?
Or just receive email only from subscribers?
Why not both?

These are "whys", I'm just asking.

We did the latter one but no longer now since non-subscribers often
need to post to alsa-devel ML, too, especially Cc'ed from LKML posts.

The problem seems in the redirection from *@alsa-project.org to SF's
address.  The spams tend to go through in this route.
Maybe an additional filtering in this route would be efficient.

I offered to help out with that (I'm also a mimedefang and spamassassin 
developer)
but didn't  hear back.

My suggestion is: reply with a challenge from any non-subscriber post, 
and then (optionally) insert the sender in a whitelist so s/he doesn't 
need to go through the challenge process at every message. There is 
mailing list software out there that does that -- is Sourceforge's among 
them?

Overkill and too annoying for the casual poster.

We could knock out 90% of the spam by banning .gif and .jpg attachments.

I don't know, my instinct says that's overly optimistic. This particular 
flood of spam happened to be comprised of an image attachment, but 
there's LOTS of spam that's text-only. You can do that, it sure is no 
harm, but I predict we'll be experiencing spam floods again soon thereafter.

I don't think we need to get it all, I'm perfectly happy with a 90% S/N
ratio.  But there are many for whom a single spam is too much.

well it's like 90/10 S/N ratio, yes. 
My spamassassin runs hot with this list. *hint* :)

But, you can see in the headers that SF already runs everything through
SA.  However some of the obvious spam gets a very low spam score (3-5).
Do you have any theory about that?  Is SF's spamassassassin just poorly
tuned?
