Thanks for the AD ;). I always hesitate to announce this to loudly as it
is still in a rough state /wrt generic usability. BUT -- it does what it
should do in a very straight way: install a mini Linux/Xenomai system
for x86 + some arbitrary tools (for us of course not arbitrary) on a
flash card. In fact, most of my tests run on LiRE, either netbooted on
some PC that happen to be in reach (Etherboot is your friend) or in
qemu. And of course all our robots run on LiRE.

We are now working on the next generation of LiRE which will likely be
based on some smarter third-party build system, specifically to ease the
pain of adding and maintaining more and more packages.

If there is interest here in joining our effort, let us know. There is
no real community around LiRE yet, just a few users at another
university institute in Hannover and at the R&D department of an
automotive manufacturer (and those guys are typically _very_ silent) -
that's at least what we are aware of. But I could imagine that providing
such a cross-compilable (todo...) distro with Xenomai included may be
helpful for quite some users.

PTXdist is under consideration for quite some time, but resources were
simply too limited to "play" with it.

We first need to find a clean model how to integrate the Xenomai build
process so that we can build from a single Xenomai source tree (to allow
development on that Xenomai tree), but do not turn PTXdist upside down.
Should be feasible. Once this is done, all other packets that are
missing will be easy to port.

The roadmap then looks like using PTXdist to build binary packets (like
we now do on our own) AND a toolchain (we simply use SuSE so far), but
first keep our installation process. Enhancing PTXdist with generic
"installation skins" may be a future step, also depending on the further
development of that project.

PTXdist can easily cope with usual things like patches, patch stacks
with series files and local software packages. So everything you need
should be there without turning PTXdist upside down.

I missed the beginning of this discussion - which features are you
missing? PTXdist is able to build ipkg binary packets. It might also be
a good idea to discuss this on the PTXdist mailing list:

Xenomai is special in that it comes as one package for kernel patch,
kernel "hook" (which may also be expressed as a patch), and user space
libs/tools.

The easiest way is probably to just put the patches into

	kernel-patches-native/

of your project and create a series file for them. You can use the
normal kernel build magic then and don't have to provide your own kernel
packet. Then make a separate packet for the tools.

Ok. Note that we are very close to 0.10.5, so it might be a topic for

To avoid writing to your compact flash, you can mount the root in
read-only (option to pass to lilo/grub)
And have a ram-disk that will be mounted to /var where you have some
files that can be written (not sure that it is enough...)
