Developers,
I just confirmation that the OpenEmbedded team managed to acquire a
stand at FOSDEM'07. I'm very excited about this opportunity to present
our achievements to a broad developer audience.
I know that February is still a bit away, but I want to get into
planning this event asap.
I want to have three people at the stand during the day, but at the same
time being able for everyone to have enough time wandering around @
FOSDEM, so we need much more than just three people. Please let's first
gather commitments and then work on a time-table.
I already have commitments from the following people:
Holger
Koen
Marcin
Florian
Who else would like to be there and present OE?

I do not consider myself a OE developer in the same league as yours
truly and consortium, but if you need people at the booth you can hire
m... ehh... count me in as a volunteer. Otherwise, I will probably be
hanging out on the frontside of the booth anyway.
I am expecting you are arranging the booth babes this time round?

We just need people who've used and can talk about OE so you should be
more than qualified. At any given time, we'll try to ensure one of the
"core devs" is around so you should never be in a position where you're
out of your depth as you can refer people to them in case anyone worries
about that.
Mickey: Count me in :)
Cheers,
Richard

And we need to book planes, hotels.
I will fly from Warsaw rather then from Berlin (Poznań, where I live,
has "migration" flights to UK rather then to useful places).
Which hotel you guys propose? I heard about Astrid [1] and Notovel [2],
both looks as similiar price.

Richard, could you ask Matthew for his preference? I liked last
year's Astrid, but I'm open. Since I just bought my flight, I'd
like to book hotel soon as well.

Yes, I thought O-Hand Gang is completely coming as well and
it'd be nice if we would share breakfast. No?

I'd replied and put Matthew in the cc for comment ;-).
I don't know if he's subscribed and/or if the list is subscriber only

Matthew doesn't know what we're doing and probably won't for a while
yet. We're not sure exactly who will be there atm although I will be :).
Breakfasts were expensive at the Novotel so I'd be tempted by the Astrid
if the breakfasts were reasonable there.

Here we are! Then let's declare the Astrid the official OE developer

If someone could provide the text and some pics for a flyer i could arrange
some of out graphic designers to come up with a couple of ideas.
I can also "sponsor" printing a few hundred of them.
Same for posters etc. (will also need size)

I'm not a big sci-fi fan myself, so I actually typed a full paragraph
of explanation in there, then decided nah... it would only spoil the
fun for those who recognize it.
On the other hand, for the FOSDEM people, I think we will have a high
hit ratio with this one :-)
I liked the link to BitBake.
Should we stick with one slogan, or should we make up some more?

I definitely love to stick with it -- it's perfect for flyers,
however for the full A3 poster we should come up with much more stuff.

Please feel free to come up with some more. We could use some work on
the advertising side of things and I'm sure we can find uses for other
words too!
I think FOSDEM is geeky enough for the above to work :)
Also if there is anyone else out there interested in helping with this
side of things, speak up!
Cheers,

Ok, let's get it started. Tempus fugit!
Two sites I found helpful are:
http://www.swarthmore.edu/NatSci/cpurrin1/posteradvice.htm
http://www.ncsu.edu/project/posters/NewSite/
I'd like to suggest having at least three huge images on the poster to attract
guys that are wandering buy:
1.) A flow chart illustrating how different file types are mungled
into a flashable image that gets onto your device. For that I have an
idea that I can sketch you on a piece of paper. We'd need someone with
graphic talent to make it look stunning though.
2.) A developer board (without a case) running an OE-built distro
(splash screen on display, either real or cut'n'paste ;)
3.) A mobile phone or a handheld running an OE-built distro (splash
screen on display, either real or cut'n'paste ;)
The rest could be filled with huge text, not much, but enough to show
some of the cool things, i.e. at least
4.) The simplicity of .bb files,
5.) bitbake invocation for one target,
6.) and a [short] example output.
Some buzzwords could be:
* efficiency (takes all the hassle out of cross-compiling, write on
configuration file and leverage ten thousands of packages without
any further "porting")
* conciseness (split nasty things into classes and conf files => use
of abstraction)
* synergie effects (kernel and userland guys coming together, hardware
and software guys meeting in the OE ecosystem, every change benefits a
lot of architectures)
* ... ?
Regards,
:M:

Any ideas on the size of the target poster (A3, A2-A0?), and the font
size in points or cm?
Which concepts would we want to explain on the poster?
We should first summarize that I think. A graphic artist cannot make a
graphic without knowing what should be shown.
I'm quite noob there, but here's what I understand so far:
BitBake/OpenEmbedded is a set of tools and metadata to easily build
ready-to-deploy kernels, software packages or complete filesystem
images. It relieves the developer from much of the subtleties of cross
compilation and dependencies.
A bitbake recipe describes all tasks to be performed for a package,
and in which order.
A bitbake class implements tasks, can inherit tasks from other classes.
BitBake itself is the task executor, taking care of build-time and
run-time dependencies.
Tasks can be overridden and new tasks can be added.
A default chain of tasks consists of fetch, unpack, patch, configure,
compile, install, package, stage.
OpenEmbedded is a coherent set of classes, many package recipes, and
configurations for targets and distributions. Together with the
BitBake tool this allows you to build kernels and filesystem images
for your targets in an easy way.
Regards,
Leon.

One great tip:
If you must leave your poster, affix a note alerting any viewers to
your expected time of return or telling them where you can be found
(e.g., which bar).
Leon.

I think I understand the sentiment, but this is not
a tag line that will make OE popular with CE companies.
(I'm not sure if that's a goal, but I don't think
we should preclude it.)

May I suggest moving from tag lines to some actual content?

I don't understand your question. I did not suggest a
tagline, but was providing some (hopefully useful) feedback
on one that was suggested. Is the request for "some actual
content" directed at me or Bastian?
CELF members have been using OE, and CELF has promoted OE
and funded work on OE, at my direction.

Heh, at the tagline guys, of course.

I'm aware of that and it's a very good thing. I can't wait to see some
open CE devices using OE appearing. I have some ideas in the pipeline
I'd like to seen realized, but I don't know who would be interested.
Perhaps we can talk a bit next year. Atm., I'm 100% enaged in the OpenMoko
project.
Can you make it to FOSDEM'07, btw.?

I would appreciate any photos from devices running OE and also any photos
you think can be used.
(i.e displaying initial logo etc)
The higher the resolution the better.
please send them to skoroneos at digital-opsis dot com
I'll try and get a draft leaflet design by early next week
