git conversion and what is missing?

Hey,

I wonder what is missing until we finally switch to git? From my point of view 
it is:

	- Finishing this table [1]
	- Maybe fixing the script to get this one rev importer properly
	- Run the conversation...

comments?
	z.

PS: In the OM tree I changed base.bbclass to handle git repo's (almost) 
properly for the welcome message.

How do we do this? In some cases the name is in the email address, but 
what about the rest?

NOTE: This table contains not only the people that have commit access 
but everybody who has contibuted something. We
should keep this in mind before running some scripts that give access to 
the git repository.

IMO we should just disable commit access for people who didn't bother to 
add their e-mail address. If they come back to oe later
we can reenable the accounts.

I think the table is needed to properly fill out some of the commit 
messages during the conversion.

Holger, I am right about this?

Yes; it is used during conversion to properly set commits to the right
author names however I believe we can't hold it forever. We need to
set a deadline and if someone didn't fill it... so sorry.

If they miss the deadline they could still be added to .mailmap later
which would fix up most of the interesting cases (eg, git log output).

Hrm, looks like that was me.  No idea why my e-mail address got dropped
from the commit...

Nope, went via the bug tracker (I had to grovel out the commit in

Yes, you are. In git land the author has a name and mail address. People will 
try to send email to the mail address so it should be correct. The other part 
is there should be a name otherwise stuff like git-commit -c SHA1 will fail.

I like Otavio's idea with the deadline. The question is what to do with 
unknown names (coming from people using --author on mtn ci). Should we use 
the comitter id and put the name from mtn inside the comment?

This looks like a good idea. This gives the credit to the author while
doesn't block the migration.

It is obvious we should try to complete it as much as possible but I
doubt we'll complete it. I think we should set a deadline and move it
further. Otherwise we risk to stuck on it.
