It would be really great if you would reconsider the --disable-libzfs
flag that was proposed a few weeks ago.
We figured out my build problem, but the "automagic" dependency still
exists. If you don't add the configure flag, that means I have the
following choices for packaging the software on Gentoo Linux:
1. I can have the ebuild (package spec) depend on libzfs
unconditionally; not really an option given the experimental nature of
the library.
2. I can add a "blocker" for grub + libzfs, meaning that a user may
not install grub and libzfs at the same time.
3. I can patch configure.ac myself. This is likely the path I would take.
Having this in the 2.00 release would save me some patching at the
distro level. I can repost a clean patch if needed.

It was on my todo list to comment on it.
The main problem is that it's not in line with other configure options:
it has to be enable/disable and show the result in the status message
(see e.g. SDL support)

Ah, cool. I can look into that in the next couple of days.

You should set excuse here if the headers aren't found.
Also it should fail if libzfs is explicitly enable but unavailable

I left that out intentionally. If the system headers are not found,
include/grub/util/libzfs.h declares the necessary functions itself.
This is actually very common since the libzfs headers are currently
installed outside of the default include search path by the ZfsOnLinux
package. Ideally, a pkgconfig file should be provided by ZfsOnLinux
and we could use that to retrieve appropriate pre-processor flags.
However, this is outside the scope of this patch.
